DEEP PURPLE In Rock

Original 1970 UK 7-track Harvest LP with 'Gramophone Co Ltd' label credit, no EMI logo and A2/B1 matrices, and original company inner, featuring the classic line-up and including Speed King and Child In Time. The laminated gatefold sleeve has only slight creasing to the laminate, yet the spine is clearly legible and the print unblemished. There are some very light signs of spindle wear to the label but nothing severe, has one or two light cosmetic marks, that willnot affect play of this timeless record, making this a very serviceable EX copy at a great price.

 

LED ZEPPELIN Led Zeppelin III

1970 UK first pressing 10-track stereo vinyl LP on the plum & red Atlantic label, with A5/B5 matrixes, 'Do What Thou Wilt' & 'So Mote It Be' scratched into the runoff area, superb fully laminated gatefold die cut picture sleeve with rotating picture wheel. Showing just a few light marks from storage the sleeve is in great shape. The labels have only the lightest of spindle marks and just a few cosmetic surface marks are evident on the vinyl. Overall a very nice EX copy of this rarity, 40+ years on!

 

TONY OXLEY QUINTET The Baptised Traveller

Rare 1969 UK CBS 'Realm Jazz Series' green label LP, featuring the Quintet with guitarist Derek Bailey, saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and bassist Jeff Clyne, and contains four explosive free-jazz workouts! The front laminated sleeve shows just a little wear at the opening edge and the vinyl reveals only a couple of light surface marks but plays superb - an excellent copy and very hard to find!

Kate Bush...one woman's work

Think of the first things you ever heard by the astonishing Kate Bush. Think of the classic 'Kick Inside' album. What songs do you remember ?

I'm sure that one of the first to come to mind is the amazing 'Man With The Child In His Eyes'. A song with such depth of vision that it still seems incredible that it came from the mind of a teenage girl from Bexleyheath.

In fact, so good was it that she won her her first prestigious Ivor Novello award.

What we have here, written way back in the early seventies in pink felt tip, are the handwritten lyrics for the song.

In addition, written in blue ballpoint pen on the back of two sheets of a 'Naprosyn' anti inflammatory notepad [obviously borrowed from her father, a doctor] are the original lyrics to 'Saxophone Song' & the lyrics [dated 17th July 1975] for the as yet unreleased song 'Frightened Eyes'.

This amazing collection of original handwritten lyrics has finally been released by the person she gave them to over thirty five years ago. He has decided, after having them in his possession since the time before the fame & fortune caused them to drift apart, that the time has come for them to go to a new home.

A once in a lifetime chance to own this incredible, personal collection. Quite simply, unrepeatable.

Boo, and no hiss

Surprise rarity of the day, the aptly titled Boo by Juliet Lawson. This incredibly rare 1972 LP is a FACTORY SAMPLE stickered issue for review ahead of commercial release, with musical aid from such notables as Iain Blair, Lol Coxhill, plus bassist Bias Boshell and guitarist David Costa [here as producer] from revered British folk-rock group The Trees. Like many one-shot female led folk albums of the era, from Vashti Bunyan to Linda Perhacs, the record died a quiet death at the time, though picked up in later years by collectors who were properly listening. An incredible copy, the textured gatefold lyric picture sleeve is virtually mint and still a perfect off-white with no marks or ringwear of any sort. The vinyl looks unplayed! Recommended listening, and quite simply one of the best condition copies you are ever likely to find.

Yes please

The highlight of last week's buying jaunt down to deepest Sussex was a wonderful array of paperwork relating to prog-rockers 'Yes'.  This original Atlantic Records press pack is vintage 1970, sent out by their first manager Roy Flynn, prior to his sacking later that same year. Their eponymous debut released in July 1969 gained rave reviews, many of which are compiled & reproduced within this press pack, along with positive comments about their early live performances, notably at the Van Dike Club (where they were only the second band to receive a standing ovation) and at the Ninth National Jazz & Blues Festival at Plumpton Race Course.  Complimenting the 6 pages of paper treasure is a 10-inch by 8-inch period publicity photo of the original line-up, plus half a dozen of Roy Flynn's 'Yes' business cards.  The piece-de-resistance comes in the form of an original 1969 promotional pop-art poster, in the style of their British debut album artwork. A genuine original which retains its vibrant colour and continues to dazzle some 40-odd years later. Classic Yes.

 

Who's got the cream, Floyd?

Here's a stunning little set that slipped through the net. I missed seeing these when they arrived but have just had a good look, up close & personal.  The Pink Floyd programme, their first ever, flew out the door faster than hippy chasing free weed. Luckily we still have The Cream & The Who examples. These original theatre programmes were produced for Brian Epstein's Sundays At The Saville concerts in 1967 - you could only obtain the programme from the Saville theatre on the day of each performance so it's incredible that such ephemera has survived in great shape these past 43 years. Would have been even better to have been at the concert. Alas, I was not born in 1967 - ho hum!

7-inches of Stooges dynamite

Heads up punk fans.  This little beauty is due to arrive here on Monday.  The kick-ass opening track from their 1970 Funhouse album, itself widely regarded as one of the best records of all time, Down On The Street was their first single to be released in Japan and this original pressing is rarer than a rare thing in the land of the rare.  What's more our man-in-Japan tells me it is in MINT condition - in better shape than your average 40 year old punk rocker!  Truly, a once in a decade opportunity to obtain genuine punk treasure.  Don't miss out.

Single digit Stones

More treasure from the vaults this week.  Yesterday I unearthed a box of Rolling Stones goodies from their Bridges To Babylon campaign.  The thick layer of dust coating the outer box was testament to the twelve years that have passed by since last I ventured into this particular darkened corner of 991 HQ.  Opening boxes is always fun, especially when the contents are this good.  In this case there lay a small quantity of Bridges To Babylon promo boxed sets, complete with sticker, postage stamps, 2 CDs and a sampler cassette - from a time when journo's had the means to play a tape - we've not had these in stock in for over 5 years so I don't expect them to last long.  Even better was finding numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the limited edition Saint Of Me 7-inch picture disc. I remember buying these, back in 1998.  Figured they'd be worth something one day. Single digit numbers very rarely turn up, and whilst they are no more nor less unique than any other individual number, editions below 10 are often reserved for band members, management or label execs. Which makes them just a little bit special.  Not quite in the same league as a single digit Beatles White Album, granted, but pretty cool all the same.

Folk me!

Driving home last Wednesday evening I happened to catch on the radio the last 15 minutes of The Mike Harding Show.  Mostly I remember Mike Harding as a comedian but it turns out he’s a bit of a folk legend. Coincidentally he’s also Lancastrian and I was actually driving back from Manchester so there could have been some kind of weird folk cosmic waves in play.  Anyhow, I’m not usually one to listen to folk music whilst driving – it’s a bit too soporific, and I didn’t have a bale of hay in the back of the van - but before I could channel-hop to something less fiddle-de-dee the Rochdale cowboy cued up The Lazy Boy Chant by an Orkney band called The Chair.  And a right good stomping tune it was too.  So I bought their album ‘Huinka’ and have now played it three times in as many days - and there was not a beer festival in sight (more’s the pity) - I think this means I’m becoming a bit of a folker.

 

Eric Clapton vs the local police

Last week’s announcement that Eric Clapton & Jeff Beck will finally play together at London’s O2 arena had some of my fellow office-dwellers all hot & bothered and ready to raid their piggy banks for the requisite £100+ per ticket, plus parking, plus £25 tee-shirt, not to mention the over-priced burger-du-rat and warm beer from a plastic cup.  Really, I cannot be bothered.  Much closer to home, however, I can recommend the Police Squad who will be playing again this week (Thursday October 1^st) at one of my local pubs, The Walnut Tree in East Farleigh.  The gig is free, along with the parking, and I can confirm that the Shepherd Neame beer is cellar-cool, with plastic pints entirely absent.  For an even more relaxed night out I am looking forward to wining & dining at Pizza Express Maidstone’s music room.  Many a great singer & band have played there and on 6^th December the uniquely talented Thea Gilmore will be presenting Wintertide, a special set of seasonal songs, and no turkeys. And, all for a mere fifteen quid - count me in, two, three, four.

If you missed U2’s recent 360° Tour concerts, or if the reported sound problems spoiled your fun, you could rewind a few years – actually it’s an unbelievable 12 years – and relive the live extravaganza that was their Popmart Tour, filmed on 3^rd December 1997 in Mexico City.  For, in the deep, dark recesses of this office-cum-tardis I have found a secret stash of brand new, unplayed, still sealed ‘Special Edition’ DVDs, resplendent in their holographic packaging. Remixed in 5.1 surround sound and digitally regraded (whatever that means) this double DVD set features previously unreleased material, alongside all the usual suspects & favourites.  And, now that this set is out-of-print, we have them available for less that you’d pay for a Wembley burger & a can of pop.  Some say it’s even better than the real thing…

Now & Then

When you’ve sold more than 100 million records you can well afford to indulge yourself in a one of Maranello’s finest.  Indeed, I believe it’s compulsory. So, I was interested to see this little beauty recently advertised in Classic & Sports Car magazine.  Now if the Carpenters are your artist of choice you certainly cannot say your collection is complete without this in your garage.  I reckon a couple of hundred large might just secure it - a small price to pay for a glorious Daytona - then you can cruise down to the Riviera playing ‘Yesterday Once More’ on your 8-Track. Rainy days and Mondays just a distant memory...

Up the Tempo

Our first copy of this genuinely rare original 1957 In London Vol. 2 UK 'microgroove' vinyl LP, on the highly collectable Tempo Records label (TAP12), has recently landed. Beautifully evoking the post-war gloom of mid-fifties London and a historic slice of jazz in Britain at the time, it stars Victor Feldman's Big Band, Nine-tet and Quintet recorded in December ‘56 and January '57 with notable performances from Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, Jimmy Deuchar, Dizzy Reece, Kenny Napper, Phil Seamen and more.  Pressed in small quantities, the 'rough' textured white & purple Tempo labels are spotless with no spindle wear, indicating very little play, if any.  In terms of condition this is one of the best examples of an early Tempo record to surface on the collectors market and possibly the best original copy you are likely to find of this particular album. A superb jazz rarity to be treasured and an investment item for the future.  If I look this good at 52 years old I’ll be extremely pleased, not to mention very surprised!
