991.com brings you excerpts from this weeks R.C. Weekly Newsletter. If you want to receive the full unedited version with offers, news and reviews each week, please contact [email protected]
Well, after months of gossip, I have finally reached the end of the road with my long-suffering loved one. Regular subscribers who are kind enough to take pity on this column and read it will recall last week’s disaster, when my addiction to vinyl saw me trying radical therapy which, the scientist in charge told me, could “fix you”. For a while, it worked. I didn’t go on eBay for at least 20 hours. My svelte (ahem) outline could not be clocked at the Music & Goods Exchange at Notting Hill Gate, and unneccessarily fierce charity shop under-manageresses were wondering whether I had died because nobody had asked: “Are there any more records you haven’t put out yet, please?” But my cure’s magic failed: I fell off the wagon yesterday, and now I have parted forever from the one I love most.
Mortifying news, I know. But don’t cry: in many ways, we are now closer than ever. Our separation is not a result of any falling out; it’s more a recognition that, with hearts full of sadness, we needed to move on with our lives as individuals rather than as a couple. It’s not so much a break-up as a conscious uncoupling. We will forever remain united in our hearts; it’s just in every other aspect of our lives that we cannot be together. Although the full conditions of our parting have yet to be decided, I am hoping to keep hold of the records, and desperately hoping that I won’t win custody of our adored semi-housetrained Rottweilers, Ozzy and Shazzy.
You are perhaps wondering what the final straw was. It was a single on the Coxsone label; appropriately Delroy Wilson’s Troubled Man in VG+. I could not resist it. Without even thinking about it, I put my hand in my pocket and that moment was the watershed: I knew it marked the last time I’d see my beloved. I had hoped we would never be parted. Of course, I still have the record to console me, but I shall miss my loved one so much after all these years together. I will be bereft without the sheer confidence it gave me, its sense of style, and the reassuring fact it says “50” in big type on it. When I got home, the missus eyed my 7”-square paper bag and said: “Not more records! I hope it’s not that dreadful Coldplay. The dogs just got your dinner. If you think you’re man enough to snatch it back from them, feel free to try.”
The new issue of the mag is now in the shops: a bright red cover with Marc Bolan on the front and heaps of great stuff inside – see below. I hope you like it.
Thank you for reading RC and this newsletter,
Have a great week,
Best wishes
Ian McCann

JOHN LENNON 70th Birthday Remasters Series (A wonderful collection of no fewer than thirty two 30cm by 42cm pieces of proof artwork for the remasters series, including the artwork for John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Some Time In New York City, Mind Games, Walls And Bridges, Rock 'n' Roll, Double Fantasy & Milk And Honey. The artwork also includes proof art for the Gimme Some Truth four CD collection. Of the thirty two, eleven are pristine, but twenty one of them show an element of water staining to some degree and fifteen of those show some paper loss although in only seven cases does this affect the printed artwork. Being proof art, these are often annotated with notes for the subsequent printing and some also have 'Photo Here' blank place markers. Printed onto thick card stock, unlike the digipack bookets themselves, these have otherwise survived in wonderful condition with bright colours and pure white whites. Given the sheer quantity offered here, there is a significant proportion of the printed 5½" by 5" printed areas that are completely unaffected by the historical water, which appears to have snuck up on one corner of the unsorted pile some time in the past. What you choose to do with these and how you choose to file or display them really depends on you, but none of the main cover artwork appears affected, although some do have hand annotations. A remarkable set to commemorate the equally remarkable solo career of one of the most remarkable songwriters to ever have blessed this third stone from the sun)
OASIS Stop The Clocks (ULTRA RARE 2006 UK promotional-only 'divers' style chunky watch with silver toned casing and watch face featuring the dartboard image taken from 'Stop The Clock' album artwork. The black fabric strap has a rubberised velco fastening and features a black & white 'Oasis' logo just below the watch face. A very limited number of these were manufactured - rumoured to be only 20/25 made! This scarce promo watch must be coolest way to keep time)
BERT JANSCH & JOHN RENBOURN Bert & John (Scarce 1966 UK 12-track mono vinyl LP of beautiful interlocking steel-string guitar by the duo, on the rough textured Transatlantic label with black & purple lettering on white, fully laminated picture sleeve. Both the sleeve & vinyl are in near mint condition. A stunning condition copy! TRA144)

While you were out enjoying long tall glasses of black and white stuff to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Monday, I was undergoing a traumatic psychological treatment. In fact it had been going on since Friday. I’m feeling much better now. Honest. I am. Honest. I am. Honest.
It all started when I woke up at 5.11am on Thursday and reached for the laptop. I’d left it switched on so I could bid on an eBay record at the last minute. My long-suffering wife stirred. “What are you doing?” she groaned. But my missus knew what I was doing; she was simply polite enough to ask questions and then shoot, rather than the other way around. “Nothing, darling,” I said, “it’s just an eBay item. I won’t be long, just go back to sleep.” I’d made a fundamental error here. “Again?” said my missus. Funny how one word can be loaded with so much meaning, which was: “Don’t tell me to go back to sleep. You’ve already woken me at 1.35 to look at eBay. And 3.19, 4.03 and 4.54. Where’s my gun?”
You don’t need the details of the argument that ensued, but it was along the lines of “this can’t go on” and “I’m going back to mother”. The latter is particularly worrying, because even my missus believes my mother-in-law is sent from down below. I was sat there, face like that of Bruce Forsyth’s love child with Jimmy Hill, and fag ash falling down my dressing gown – which was strange because nobody in the house smokes. Anyway, the upshot was, I agreed to go on a course to break my addiction to records. That’s where I was for four days.
It was quite a course. It opened with group therapy, where I had to confess to being addicted to the Pama group of labels, such as Gas, Crab, and Pama Economy on which horrors such as this lurk. There were murmurs of sympathy from my fellow patients; they seemed very nice but some of them, like myself, probably only used a flannel for wiping a 45 found at a charity shop. Having acknowledged my problem, the treatment proper started. I was put in a room, electrodes stuck to my skull, and was shown photos of muscular guys with only old glam 45s to protect their modesty. Every time I peered closer – purely to work out which pressing of John, I’m Only Dancing it was – I received an electric shock of increasing intensity. That evening, I was given a drink that made me feel queasy, and was then forced to bid £993.76 for this record. No need for that drink, I was already feeling upset by the record, but it went on all weekend. Freddie & The Dreamers, Dannii Minogue, anything by Bieber; I was forced to bid fortunes while shouting for Hughie. I couldn’t tell night from day. Apparently, this treatment is called classical conditioning – but it works for pop too. I was cured.
On Monday night, I got home, chucked the laptop into the back yard and introduced it to a hammer. At last, I was in my better half’s good books and we made passionate embrace without my looking over her shoulder at eBay (for once). On Tuesday morning, exhausted, I lay in bed until the morning post turned up at 3.45pm. “I’ll get it,” the missus called brightly. Then I heard an exasperated wail, and the front door slammed. I rushed to the window – and saw my wife bunging a suitcase into the boot of her motor. She drove off at speed.
Baffled, I went downstairs – to find a pile of square, flat parcels: How Much Is That Doggie In the Window, Freddie & The Dreamers, Dannii Minogue, Bieber… yes, I did feel sick.
In the forthcoming issue of Record Collector, out on 27 March: how T.Rex were the first to turn glam into soul; ABBA’s amazing rarities; the life and times of the Marquee Club; ESP-Disk’; hoax bands; Ry Cooder; Smokey Robinson; a Bowie Vinyl Fetish and masses more. If you get hooked on it, it’s at your own risk…
Thank you for reading this newsletter and RC.
Have a great week, best wishes,
Ian McCann
