Each track is dedicated to the signs of the zodiac & is a fully composed masterpiece from the late Dankworth, front laminated internal pocket gatefold sleeve with extensive notes. The sleeve shows little of its age & the vinyl looks barely played.

 

ELVIS PRESLEY Paradise, Hawaiian Style

Rare 1966 Japanese original HMV Victor black & silver label 'Living Stereo' LP. This copy is perfect with MINT vinyl. The laminated gatefold picture sleeve is stunning, retaining vibrant colours andunfaded white titles, plus crisp white background with the full lyrics printed inside the gatefold. Complete with the original blue and white obi, which is usually missing from these 45+ year old originals. Early 70s Japanese only 12-track white label promo sample mono LP, including Japanese insert, unique picture sleeve & narrow obi-strip.

 

 

QUEEN Queen

1981 East German only 12-track LP compilation album, unique group photo picture sleeve with sleeve notes in German on the back. The sleeve has some minor storage wear mostly on the edges and a small water mark to the bottom left corner. The vinyl is graded EX- with some minor surface scuffs which should have no effect on play. Nice copy of this rarity!

 

ABBA Lay All Your Love On Me / Super Trouper / On And On And On

Mega Rare 1981 Japanese 3-track Discomate white title label promotional only 12". Housed in a unique picture sleeve featuring a reproduction of the top 60 chart taken from theweeklymagazine 'Billboard' from 2nd May 1981, highlighting the three Abba songs at Number 1. The sleeve on this copy has only a few storage marks mostly on the edges & corners, the vinyl is in a superb near mint condition with only a few very verylight surface marks - impossibly hard to find.

R.D. BURMAN Heera Panna

1973 Indian 6-track stereo vinyl LP, a psychedelic soundtrack to Dev Anand's Bollywood/LSD movie, pressed on heavyweight vinyl by Odeon. Includes enticing nuggets such as 'Freak Out Music', no doubt some top notch fuzz madness & sound effects from the one & only R.D. Burman! 

 

SHANKAR JAIKISHAN Bombay Talkie

1970 Indian 13-track vinyl LP soundtrack to the Hindi movie, pasted picture sleeve with catalogue inner. The sleeve reveals just a little light edge wear but is otherwise in superb condition due to the heavy stock card used.

BERNARD HERRMANN Taxi Driver

1976 UK 10-track vinyl LP of Herrmann's fabulously menacing & atmospheric score to the classic Martin Scorsese film starring Robert De Niro, his last work as Bernard passed away soon after the recording.

 

FRED MYROW & MALCOLM SEAGRAVE Phantasm

TAS listed 1979 US 16-track stereo vinyl LP soundtrack to Don Coscarelli's cult b-movie horror classic, housed in a fully textured pasted sleeve featuring superb artwork from the movie. The soundtrack has actually long been praised by audiophile collectors for its deep & wide sound stage & 'alive' presence. Scored for exotic percussion, Yamaha YC30 Synth, Clavinet, Fender Electric Piano 88, Mellotron & more, the music is otherworldly,multi-textured & fully evocative of the film’s surreal mood. Highly recommended, & if you don't add this to the collection the Tall Man will be waiting for you!

1967 US 10-track stereo vinyl LP, a 'psychsploitation' soundtrack to the motion picture & very much a sixties period piece, devised by Mike Curb & Lawrence Brown. Mrs Miller even sings the drug's theme song!

TAS listed 1977 UK 12-track Decca Phase 4 Stereo vinyl LP, as performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra, front laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve shows minimal wear & the vinyl looks barely played - a wonderful copy!

1972 UK 1st press pink-rim Island 'palm tree' label 10-track LP, textured gatefold picture sleeve with lyrics printed inside. The sleeve shows a fair degree of edge scuffing, common with this type of sleeve, so would be gradedVG+/EX-. The previous owner has written their name on the b-side label, otherwise only has a couple of spindle marks. The vinyl remains in EX-/EX with only a few light surface marks which do not affect play. A very acceptable condition copy at an advantageous price!

 

DEEP PURPLE Made In Japan

1972 UK first issue 7-track double vinyl LP, featuring recordings made in Osaka & Tokyo, in August 1972, with 'Gramophone Company' perimeter text and 1U matrices on all sides along with the 'Porky', 'Delta Pork', 'Pecko' & 'Peckie' etchings, laminated gatefold sleeve. The sleeve has only a few shelfwear marks and light signs of age. The vinyl remains a beautiful EX-/EX with just a couple of light surface marks which do not affect play, the labels have a fewspindle marks but still superb. A very respectable copy of this 40 year old album.

 

STATUS QUO Piledriver

1972 UK 8-track Vertigo 'swirl' label LP, the fifth studio album by the English rock band, their first to be produced by the group themselves & first on the Vertigo label after their departure from Pye Records. Features the single Paper Plane and a great cover of the Door's classic Roadhouse Blues, comes in a matt gatefold picture sleeve printed with lyrics on the inside complete with the original 'swirl' inner. The sleeve is near mint showing few signs of its age. The vinyl has been professionally cleaned and reveals only the lightest few marks by the spindle area to indicate play. A superb copy of this sought after original.

1969 US second issue 6-track stereo vinyl LP, housed in alternate back pasted 'B' group picture sleeve which replaced the withdrawn naked girl cover. This issue remarkably remains factory sealed from new and is therefore MINT and unplayed!

 

 

JULY July

Very rare 1969 Brazilian first [& only] issue of the 1968 12-track mono LP with Major/Minor credits to the labels & sleeve. This LP was produced in extremely small numbers, making it actually rarer than the UK version. Originally released on Major Minor in the UK, this superb release went largely unnoticed at the time, but is now held in the same high regard as Tomorrow, Blossom Toes, The Koobas and many other luminaries of the UK Sixties psych scene, with awesome bitingguitar, rich harmonies, sitar, bongos, and above all, inventive songwriting. Apart from a couple of small splits that have appeared in the top & bottom seams as a result of forty years of storage, the fully laminated picture sleeve shows just a few light creases and a little edgewear, with the spine text still remaining clearly visible. The labels display only minor spindlewear and the vinyl itself reveals very little indication of play with surface noise kept to a minimum throughout. Far from the norm with Brazilian releases of this age, which are normally found wrecked with torn sleeves & an abundance of writing, this copy shows no such defects apart from those already mentioned. A superb copy of this seldom seen South American mono issue of a very rare album indeed!

 

AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

Rare 1976 Australian 8-track black & yellow Albert label LP, the third studio album by Australian hard rock band, unique picture sleeve featuring the original Australian only artwork. The sleeve displays barelyany discernible wear and the vinyl has only a couple of surface marks which has no effect on play. A very respectable copy.

The big news in Britain is Sir Alex Ferguson announcing his retirement. I am somewhat disappointed that my name has not been mentioned for the briefly vacant role of Manchester United manager. I am no stranger to delivering the hairdryer treatment, having run my own chain of record shop/hairdressers for many years, Hairy Freekz (motto: “Our records are covered in hair. Try HMV next time”). And shouting in a Scottish accent is something one mastered at RADA, darling. No, not the acting academy, it turned me down for having no talent whatsoever; I mean Records And Discs Aberdeen, a market stall I frequented where the proprietor couldn’t hear you because he played Montrose at high volume all day, believing they came from the town in Angus rather than California (bet you were expecting AC/DC). Despite the fact that the Man U hierarchy has ignored my obvious claim to his role, in tribute to the great Sir Alex all the records RC’s staff listen to today will have eight minutes of time added – for no apparent reason. Fergie is said to be a Tony Bennett fan; hopefully he’ll be whiling away Lazy Afternoons now.

It’s that time of year when many of us forget about music and our thoughts turn to the birds and bees. Luckily, I am long past all that, despite medicinal intervention, so I can still spend time thinking about tunes and wondering how it is that I can be in Thaxted, in the wilds of North Essex, and yet still find a copy of a near-to-Mint original Sly Stone album on a bank holiday market stall. Indeed, it’s a puzzle. Anyway, at least one of the acts in this paragraph features in the next issue of Record Collector, which hits the shops in a fortnight. I won’t tell you which one, but the name ends in Head. And who doesn’t like anything that ends in head? I dare you to click: would I try to get you into trouble? This weekend I won’t be in North Essex at all, but I’ll give a quick mention for an event due south that I always enjoy: the Coach & Horses Blues Jam in Leyton, East London, which is celebrating its 10^th Anniversary with special guests this Sunday from 3-7pm. This place knows how to party – in a bluesy, growlin’, whiskey-soaked way, and I commend it to you. And don’t forget the Miles Davis Night, also this Sunday in Carmarthenshire, as flagged up here last week. See below.

Late 60s US third label variant 11-track stereo vinyl LP with white text '360 Sound' labels but without 'Nonbreakable' text, second variant pasted picture sleeve with '<--STEREO-->' logos front & back. The sleeve shows barely any shelfwear, as it remains in the original [opened] shrinkwrap. The vinyl also remains in excellent condition with just a few light paper scuffs to show for nearly fifty years.

 

PETE TOWNSHEND Another Scoop

This copy also includes a one page reproduction 'open letter' insert from Charles Mingus. The sleeve shows just a little light shelfwear with some creasing to the corners & the vinyl is flawless - Seldom found complete with the 'letter' insert!

ELVIS PRESLEY Baby Let's Play House

Extremely rare 1955 US wide centred 7" vinyl single, also including I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone [although the label appears to state I'mLeft, You'reRight, She'sGone]. Elvis' Sun singles have reached legendary status and they are seldom found in as sweet condition as this one.

The rarity & legendary collectability of the early Elvis Sun singles is well known and needs no further explanation here.
What you really need to know is how you can be sure it's for real & what sort of condition it is in.

Let's start with the identifying marks:

This 7" was pressed in Memphis by Plastic Products as part of a batch run of probably as little as five hundred. The way to tell this is by evidence of three locating circular pressing lugs that can be seen and felt under the label. All Elvis Sun singles that were pressed in Memphis have these marks, which were impressions from the master stamper alignment lugs.
If a single needed to be pressed in greater quantities when it became a local or national hit, then the pressings were sent away to other plants, normally the big ones in Los Angeles. These copies do not have the three impressions under the label but are still original Sun issues.
So, without the impressions under the label, it might be an original. With the impressions under the label, it IS an original.

The labels themselves remain in lovely condition, even though they were not the best printed labels in the world. All the text is still clear & sharp with very little wear evident. There is no writing or any evidence of historical sticker marks to be seen. The matrices are hand scratched into the run off area.

The vinyl remains in astonishing condition, free from any but the lightest paper scuff and completely free of any scratches.
The final clincher to the certainty of this being an original Sun single and not a counterfeit or seventies re-issue is the presence of the famous 'Sun Hiss' when listening.

ELVIS PRESLEY All Shook Up

Very rare 1957 UK second issue 7" vinyl single, with intact four prong push-out centre & silver label lettering, also featuring That's When Your Heartaches Begin, His Master's Voice company die cut paper sleeve. The vinyl on this copy remains in a wonderful EX/-EX condition with only minor surface paper scuffs to show for its fifty five years - A great copy of this rare Elvis original UK single!

 

LED ZEPPELIN Led Zeppelin III

Rare 1970 UK first press 10-track stereo LP on the plum & red Atlantic label with 'Peter Grant' label credit below the album title, 'Do What Thou Wilt' / 'So Mote It Be' hand-scratched into the run-outs, plus die-cut laminated gatefold sleeve with the unusual front panel top & bottom opening [later issues discarded this]. The Peter Grant credit [the band's executive producer] is a very tough pressing to find, this text was absent from all later issues. The sleeve is strictly graded VG/VG+, with some minor shelfwear, the rotating picture wheel is in full working order. The previous owner has also written their initials on the back. The vinyl is also VG/VG+ with just a few surface marks which do not affect play, we have professionally cleaned & play tested the whole album and it still sounds stunning with only the odd pop/click. A respectable copy of this 40 year old pressing at an advantageous price.

 

U2 Zoo Station

Rare 1992 US promotional 3-track 12" PICTURE DISC, issued to promote the North American Tour in Spring '92, listing all US tour dates on the reverse side with the tracklisting on Side 1, also including Lady With The Spinning Head - 3:54 Version and 6:06 Extended Dance Mix.

VELVET UNDERGROUND The Velvet Underground & Nico

Rare 1973 Japanese 11-track stereo LP issue of the astonishing 1967 debut, vastly influential and justifiably legendary, housed in the classic Andy Warhol designed pasted sleeve with glossy finish, unpeeled banana, Japanese/lyric insert and obi-strip. There are a couple of small hairline splits in the obi but otherwise the condition is excellent and the vinyl looks barely played.

 

MAGNA CARTA Seasons

Rare 1970 UK very first issue 15-track vinyl LP on the large Vertigo 'swirl' label, produced by Gus Dudgeon & featuring an all-star supporting cast of musicians including Rick Wakeman, Tim Renwick, Davy Johnstone & Tony Visconti, gatefold matt picture sleeve with die-cut 'swirl' inner. The sleeve shows just a few light storage marks but is otherwise in excellent condition with all print perfectly legible & no creasing. What's spectacular about this exampleis the vinyl retains its original sheen, & may have only been played once or twice in its life, in other words near mint! A stunning archive copy.

 

LED ZEPPELIN At Knebworth 1979

Original 1979 official UK 28-page programme for the concerts held at Knebworth House on the 4th and 11th of August 1979, with photographs and biographies of all the artists featured on the bill including Fairport Convention, Todd Rundgren And Utopia, Southside Johnny and Chas And Dave. The front cover shows few signs of age with only minimal wear & is free from rips or tears - a superb copy!

BOB DYLAN Bringing It All Back Home

Incredibly rare 1965 US first pressing 11-track STEREO vinyl LP on the red Columbia '<-- 360 Sound -->' 'nonbreakable' label with text in black - very few stereo copies were manufactured and issued withthis label as most pressings were mono. The pasted picture sleeve remains in superb condition in the original shrink with Subterranean Homesick Blues 'song hype' sticker. The vinyl is immaculate and has obviously been cared for very carefullyover the past near on fifty years. A staggering copy that you would be extremely unlikely to better, however many years you search.

Friday's Top Three! Including An Autographed Offering From Bruce Dickinson, A '67 Gem From The 'Floyd And Hendrix's Smash Hits!

BRUCE DICKINSON Signed Torpedo Tube Plaque

Ok the story goes.... Bruce made a surprise visit to the nuclear submarine HMS Victorious [stationed at HM Naval Base Clyde near Helensburgh in Scotland] by way of a special invitation from the vessel'sCaptain, Bruce a self-confessed fan of submarines, spent three days [27th-30th January 2012] experiencing first-hand what it was like to live and work on board. Whilst touring the vessel he signed autographs for the crew, one of the itemswas this unusual and unique piece. A plaque taken from torpedo tube number 6, Bruce has signed the back with the message 'Farewell cruel world' & 'Armageddin it.' plus dated '27-30 2012' all in black marker pen. THE PINK FLOYD Arnold Layne

It's 1967, you're walking down Carnaby Street in your blue velvet trousers & you hear a strange song about somebody stealing washing echoing out of the nearest boutique. Upon investigation you discover the debut 7" ofa new band called 'The Pink Floyd' with Candy And A Current Bun on the b-side, tucked nicely into a die cut die-cut Columbia paper sleeve. This copy looks lovely with just a few light surface scuffs to prevent a mint grading. 'I'll never findone like this again', you think, so you buy it - I would too.

 

 

JIMI HENDRIX Smash Hits

1968 UK 12-track stereo LP, featuring the classic tracks Purple Haze, Fire, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary & more, front laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve has creasing to the laminate yet the print on the back is still off-white & the spine perfectly legible. The previous owner has also stamped their name on the back. The vinyl reveals just a couple of light surface scuffs but these are not deep enough to affect play, otherwise an excellent copy!

THE BEATLES Abbey Road

Very rare original 1969 Japanese first issue 16-track LP pressed on Red 'Everclean' vinyl, picture sleeve which has a tracklisting order error with 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' swapped with 'Something'; complete with black inner sleeve, lyric insert and the rare 'medallion' obi-strip. The sleeve has some light wear to the edges, the labels have a small amount of foxing and the vinyl has just a couple of light inaudible surface scuffs which has no effect on play. A superb, complete and rare edition of this great album.

 

JIMI HENDRIX Hey Joe

Rare original 1968 Japanese Polydor label 2-track 7" vinyl single manufactured by Nippon Grammophon, also including Stone Free, comes in a unique flipback picture sleeve with Japanese text biography and lyrics printed on the reverse. The sleeve has only a few light signs of shelfwear with light creases, a little foxing and general light signs of age, however this does not detract from the striking cover design & there are no splits with secure flipbacks. The vinyl is in superb condition retaining a beautiful shine nearly 40 years on - a great copy of this hard to find issue at an advantageous price!

 

IRON MAIDEN Corre A Las Colinas

Rare 1982 Spanish issue promotional wide centred 7" for 'Run To The Hills', also includes Eclipse Total 'Total Eclipse'. The labels are clearly printed with 'promoción' promo text, comes in a superb Spanish & English titled textured picture sleeve with a promo stamp on theback. The sleeve on this copy has only a few light signs of storage wear on the edges & corners which you would normaly expect to see but has no tears. The vinyl is in a remarkable 'near as new' outstanding condition. A stunning copy of thishighly collectable single, the first copy we have ever seen.

The 13" square picture box reproduces the album artwork front & back and was available for a very limited time to initial purchasers of both LP sets. The box has just some light edge scuffing and both LP sets are in superb condition, having been protected by the box for over thirty-five years!
