Quantity of Ten UK Danbury Mint special edition 8" diameter commemorative fine porcelain plates with a 22 carat Gold rim, each featuring a different well known colour portrait image of Freddie, with facsimile signature and silhouette motif on the reverse. The first ten consecutive plates in the set of twelve from the Freddie Mercury Collection, these were limited subscription issues only and are now only available via the collectors market - each comes with the original circular certificate of authenticity which individually numbered.

LORD SUTCH Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends

Original 1970 UK plum & red Atlantic label 12-track vinyl LP featuring a veritable 'who's who' of UK classic rock heroes - Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, John Bonham, Nicky Hopkins, Noel Redding, etc & produced by Jimmy Page. Superb front laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve has only a few signs of age with only light laminate lift/crease on the edges to show for being over 40 years old, the vinyl has only a couple of light surface marks which has no effect on play. A very respectable copy.

 

NIRVANA Nevermind

2011 Japanese Super Deluxe Limited Edition 5-disc [4 x SHM-CD / DVD] boxset - Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album's release, it's only right that it is marked with a lavish repackaging. Featuring the original album [with an additional spread of B-sides from its singles, and live versions of non-Nevermind tracks 'Sliver', 'Been a Son' and 'School'] alongside a collection of cuts from the band's Smart Sessions [when Chad Channing was still their drummer] and a number of ear-piercing rehearsal takes taped directly onto a boombox. Their full live set from their performance at the Paramount Theatre, Seattle on Halloween 1991 is included on both SHM and DVD. And finally, the 'Devonshire Mixes' of 'Nevermind', running in the order of the final album, albeit without 'Polly' and 'Endless Nameless'. Butch Vig put these together as the album was coming together, so they're as much his vision as the band's - which, to fans, will be welcomed after Andy Wallace's heavy-handed mixing of 'Nevermind' wiped clean some of its rawness. A fantastic and unmissable set pressed on the Japanese-exclusive audiophile SHM [Super High Material] discs, all housed in a sealed deluxe box with a beautifully constructed accompanying 90-page booklet full of rarely and never-before-seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era, with Japanese liner note booklet!

Rare 1970 UK silver & black Track label second sleeve issue of the 6-track vinyl LP recorded live at New York's Fillmore East, presented in a superb gatefold picture sleeve. This was the replacement to the 'puppet' cover and now seems even harder to find than the original! The sleeve itself shows some minor signs of edgewear and creasing; the vinyl has just a couple of hairline marks and there are a few spindle marks on the labels. An excellent copy of this scarce issue!

1998 Japanese-only Limited Collector's Edition Box. Includes 9 different coloured vinyl LP's all with cool picture sleeves, sheet of glossy colour stickers, 6 picture infomation cards, and a 34-page 12" x 12" lyricbooklet with a full colour pull-out concert poster. All this is still housed in the original box inside a box with original red and black corner obi-sticker! An absolutely awesome set which rarely comes up in such fantastic condtion as this, with only some slight creasing the the obi sticker to show its age, while the box itself and all contents are in spectacular MINT condition. Legendary 1970 UK 7-track stereo LP of dark infused melodies and soul crushing lyrics that made Black Widow such fun to listen to and see live. Not the sort of band that would be adored by your Granny, but certainly the sort of band that made the turn of the decade from the Sixties to the Seventies such a heavy place to be. The flimsy non-laminated gatefold picture sleeve bears the usual scars of battle, with some edge scuffing & a little light wear, but no rips, tears or writing. However, the vinyl is in near mint condition, with just a couple of light surface marks, and a few spindle marks on the labels. An oustanding copy of this rarity.

 

JOHN LENNON Imagine

Original 1971 UK first pressing 10-track LP with A1/B1 matrices and 'Porky/Pecko' run-out groove etching, fully laminated picture sleeve complete with lyric inner, fold-out poster and postcard. This has been superbly professionally mounted in an 18½" square wooden frame and looks amazing. What makes this even more special is that the signed sleeve is a unique GREEK variant with pink faces instead of the usual white& solid Harvest logo in the bottom right. A fantastic item that will take pride of place in any room or office as a celebration of the early years of this legendary hard rock band!

This particular copy is housed in the stereo printed sleeve with 'SCX 6258' catalogue number. The cover is in decent shape with only light signs of creasing to the laminate. The vinyl (mono playback, 'SX6258' labels) has been professionally cleaned and shows just some light scuff marks - the disc plays through fine and is conservatively graded as VG on visual inspection. A very respectable copy at a fair price!

 

TERRY REID Terry Reid

Rare 1969 UK 9-track stereo LP, the second album from the cult singer/guitarist, produced by Mickie Most, with versions of Stay With Me Baby and Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited alongside the self-penned originals. The front laminated sleeve shows just a little ring wear and a spot of yellowing at the edges yet is otherwise in excellent condition, with secure flipbacks and a perfectly legible spine. The vinyl is clean and reveals only the very lightest signs of play- super!

Rare 1969 UK Apple label variant 16-track LP with the misaligned Apple on the back of the sleeve and without 'Her Majesty' credit. The sleeve shows only the lightest signs of ageing at the edges but is otherwise in excellent condition. The vinyl looks barely played - a very nice copy and close to near mint!

1971 UK yellow label 10-track LP, housed in the classic top-opening & fully working bronze finish 'zipper' sleeve designed by Andy Warhol, complete with illustrated/tongue logo insert. There is just the faintest signs of creasing by the zipper but nothing of any significance. The spine is crisp & perfectly legible & there is just the lightest edge wear to the bottom. The vinyl has been professionally cleaned and shows just one or two light marks with age. A nice copy!

Thursday's Top Three! Including An Immense, One-Off George Harrison Letter, Tape & Single, A superb Tyrannosaurus Rex LP And A First Press From Can!

GEORGE HARRISON Letter, Tape & Single

What we have here is unique. Way back when, a certain lady by the name of Sylvia Griffin [of Kissing The Pink fame] was co-writing songs with a lady called Renate for a solo project. This particular Renate was then the wife of a famous piano player by the name of Elton John. At one party thrown by Elton & Renate, Sylvia met a Mr George Harrison, who used to be in a group that were quite famous once. They got chatting and George agreed to record some slide guitar on her new single. This came to pass, and a copy of that very single is part of this package. As George wanted to record his slide part at his home studio in Henley, Oxfordshire, the master tapes were taken from Air Studios to George's house for the recording. After laying down his slide part, some more chatting took place about the music that George was then working on with a Bulgarian Choir & Ry Cooder. As a result of this, some small time later, Sylvia got a visit from the postman. Inside the package that had been delivered was a letter from George addressed to her & Renate on Friar Park Studio notepaper and a C30 cassette tape. On one side of the tape was a Ry Cooder song from his then to be released new album 'Get Rhythm' & on the other side three tunes from 'Chicken Skin Music', all of which were provided so that Sylvia could 'really get into the accordion - man!'. The letter finishes nicely being signed with a simple 'Love from George', to which he had added '(Harrisong)' underneath, presumably so that Sylvia could remember which George it was [!]. So, what we have here is that very C30 cassette tape with hand titled stickers, presumably by George himself, the handwritten letter from Mr Harrison, a letter of provenance from Sylvia & a copy of the finished 7" upon which George's beautiful slide playing can be heard. As you may imagine, this is one of one, so we won't be re-stocking it, it won't be going in any sale & once it's gone, it's gone!

1970 UK first issue 13-track stereo vinyl LP, complete with original picture lyric insert, fully laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve show just the lightest of edge scuffing or creasing & the vinyl is flawless- a fantastic copy of this superb album!

 

 

CAN Tago Mago

1971 UK first press 8-track double vinyl LP, superb textured envelope-style picture sleeve which was unique to the UK edition. This copy remains in excellent condition.

1968 UK Philips label 10-track vinyl LP of the debut album by the guitarist who has chalked up playing for Canned Heat, The Rolling Stones and John Mayall on his resume and is known for being a pioneer of the two-handed fretboard tapping technique. Housed in a fully laminated psychedelic picture sleeve with only minimal laminate lifting/creasing evident to the spine and otherwise in superb shape. With just a few spindle marks indicating light play the vinyl itself is in stunning condition for its age - a wonderful near mint copy of this 40+ year old LP!

Scarce 1996 UK official BPI certified Multi-Platinum award presented to JOHN DEACON for UK sales in excess of 1.2 million copies of the Parlophone album. Measuring approximately 34" x 24" in size, the elaborate presentation features a supersize Freddie Mercury silhouette image above 4 mounted discs, each disc representing platinum status sales of 300,000, along with the custom BPI Certified presentation plaque. JIMI HENDRIX The Cry Of Love

Rare original 1971 UK 10-track stereo LP on the Track label, gatefold picture sleeve. This issue was available for a few short months before being re-pressed on the more familiar Polydor label and is now very difficult to find in respectable condition. This copy is in excellent shape with just a little edge scuffing. The labels show some spindle marks and the vinyl only a handle full of inaudible surface marks - an excellent copy of this now 40+ year old posthumous release!

 

JOHN MARTYN Piece By Piece

1986 UK Island label promotional only box set includes 'A Conversation With' vinyl 2-LP set, 'Classic John Martyn' 5-track vinyl 12" & CD single - this is the very first CD single that was ever released, complete witha 24-page 'Piece By Piece' booklet with a history of John Martyn. All housed in a 12" x 12" picture box. The box has some minor storage marks but all contents are in excellent condition. A fantastic collectors item that no John Martyn fan should be without.

Happy 2013. Yes, the newsletter is back, after a long break putting its feet up at a chic clinic a few exclusive kilometres outside Oslo, where highly-trained 6ft 2in blonde nurses made soothing noises and highly-trained 5ft 4in brunette waitresses tottered along on red high heels and delivered unspeakably awful food in the interests of health. What was the highlight of the newsletter’s Christmas break? An unlikely one: the posthumous discovery that its father was correct when it banned it from watching Magical Mystery Tour when it was eight years old. Finally got to see it after all these years and the newsletter thought it was terrible; nigh-on unwatchable. Still think Flying is a great instrumental, like a psychedelic MGs, and still reckon Ringo is a great drummer despite all the arguments to the contrary fuelled by a random Lennon quip, but the movie is lousy, which is clearly why the BBC screened the documentary about it first: if you’d seen the film first, you’d never watch the doc.

 

When we are not being pampered unnecessarily or peering at the telly, RC’s staff are to be found with their faces in books, tryin’ ter look interllechual and like we can read and everyfink. Normally it would be 5,000 Shades Of Black, our Vinyl Fetish novel, in which a young student falls in love with an older man who locks her in a basement and gently coaxes her to womanly fulfillment by getting her to catalogue his record collection. But from time to time we do actually read something worthwhile and we’re currently enamoured of an academic publication about our favourite objects called Vinyl: A History Of The Analogue Record, by Richard Osbourne. It basically pulls apart what we know about the vinyl record and rebuilds it from the ground up: the groove, the disc shape, the various formats, why we love them so, the record’s cultural impact, why vinyl has survived. As an academic hardback, it’s not cheap, but it made me think afresh about this obsession with plastic circles.

 

 

What else is new… ish? Bowie is back! Really. And yes, he sounds like him, oddly enough; I like it, although it’s a little funereal: (it may well have been taken down by the time you see this). At least he’s retained his dignity, unlike so many other legends; not necessarily the outcome you’d have predicted for the man who duetted with both Bing and Iggy. And there’s an official Dylan collection of out-takes released in a limited edition of, blimey, 100 copies, designed to beat the copyright laws. You can forget about getting one, though: I’ve got 49 of them propping up one corner of my desk after one of its legs fell off during RC’s drunken New Year rave.

 

Judging by the number of emails we’ve had about it already, our January edition with Queen on the cover is selling like half-price fried chicken. That follows a top-selling ELO/Jeff Lynne cover, and we’re working on some more massive classic rock acts for future editions. The next one, meanwhile, apart from revealing the reality about an oft-misunderstood aspect of The Beatles, looks into the first moments of Madonna’s fame, uncovers some vintage filth from Trunk records, and goes all 60s electronica with Silver Apples. There is more, but the stuff is being put together as I speak so I shan’t say owt else. But I promise you this is going to be a great year for Record Collector, and I hope the same applies for you.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION Fairport Convention

Extremely rare 1968 UK first issue 12-track stereo LP featuring Ian MacDonald, Judy Dyble, Richard Thompson, Simon Nichol, 'Tyger' Hutchings & Martin Lamble, produced by Joe & Tod Lloyd for Witchseason Productions. Recorded well in advance of their future popularity, this record sold quite poorly & has now become very difficult indeed to find. This is only the second copy we've ever stocked. Apart from the optimistic single 'If (Stomp)' that was released, most of the rest of this album has long since disappeared into history. This copy is very fine indeed with just a little light wear to the sleeve with no excessive laminate creasing & a clearly readable spine. The vinyl has been professionally cleaned and has come up looking sparkling - there is little evidence of play except for one tiny small scratch at the end of the first side ('Portfolio'), otherwise near mint. Easily an excellent copy of this classic debut that, although overlooked at the time, is now seen as the groundbreaking album that it actually was. Get it while you can or you could be waiting a very long time for another one to surface!

 

JETHRO TULL Thick As A Brick

Rare 1972 UK 16-page 8" x 12" tour programme in colour and black & white, featuring photographs and biographical information on Jethro Tull and their support band Tir Na Nog. The programme has survived for over 40 years and is in superb Near Mint condition, free of any marks, major creases or tears! A fantastic Jethro Tull collectors item that should not be missed out on!

Extremely rare original 1974 UK 16-page comic book style tour programme with a superb colour cover. This copy is in excellent condition and is a magnificent addition to any self respecting Pink Floyd collection!
