The booklets have only some light foxing on the covers, otherwise a near mint copy of this stunning box set.

 

THE BEATLES The Beatles Box - From Liverpool - Mail Order Issue - Ex

Extremely rare 1981 Japanese World Records Limited 'Toshiba Family Club mail-order only issue' 124-track EIGHT vinyl LP boxed set. Featuring many rare versions of classic tracks, each LP has its own picture sleeve, and the set also includes a fold out Japanese booklet and a 20-page English/Japanese lyric booklet and fold-out poster, all housed in a 12" picture box designed to look like a wooden crate. This mail order only issue is denoted by the catalogue number prefix 'EW-' on the labels themselves. The box shows a few signs of age with light scuffing to the corners and edges. The inner sleeves for numbers 1, 3, 7 and 8 all exhibit only a small seam split from storage and the vinyl has minimal signs of play - An excellent copy.

Features Warsaw, No Love Lost, Failures and Leaders Of Men, housed in a distinctive industrial sleeve. The sleeve has only some very light edgewear and spinewear, but remains in excellent condition. The vinyl too is excellent with just a couple of minor inaudible surface marks. Great example of this landmark release!

The sleeve just a little light wear & remains in excellent condition with no wear or splits to the inner. The vinyl too is fantastic with few signs of play. A wonderful copy of this classic album!

 

KISS The Originals II

1978 Japanese-only 29-track triple LP repackaging of the albums 'Destroyer', 'Rock & Roll Over' & 'Love Gun' in unique gatefold picture sleeve with inner sleeves, 8-page lyric booklet, 8-page photo booklet & four superb 'Kiss' masks! Due to the thin nature of the sleeve, they are generally found in very tatty condition. Fortunately this item exhbits only wear to the spine with creasing and some corner scuffs with few small spots of edgewear elsewear on the sleeve. The contents have remained safely contained within, with only Peter Criss' mask showing a hint of 'foxing' marks. The vinyl has only minor signs of play with light surface marks which makes this wonderful rarity an Ex condition set - A tough find in this condition!

The picture sleeve shows few minor signs of age with a hint of fading to the edges [A very common occurance on this sleeve], a small patch of spot colouration and some light edgewear with few signs of 'foxing' marks to the reverse. The vinyl is in stunning Mint condition - A fantastic copy of this very hard to find compilation.

 

DAVE BRUBECK The Dave Brubeck Quartet

Amazing 1966 UK 20-page souvenir brochure for the concert held at the old Methodist Central Hall (now the Brook Theatre) in Chatham, Kent on October the 24th, 1966, featuring the classic Brubeck lineup (Brubeck, Desmond, Morello, Wright). This beautiful period piece has the bonus addition of glowing reviews taken from newspaper clippings of the sold out concert, which are pasted inside. There is a folded crease in the programme from where it wasonce held tightly by its adoring owner but this can be forgiven - a glorious vintage slice of American jazz history in Britain.

Saturday's Top Three! Hold Onto Your Hats - We Have An Outstanding Ultra Rare Red Rodney In Beautiful Condition, An Iron Maiden Shaped Picture Disc And A Scarce Take That In-House Promo CD!

RED RODNEY Red Rodney: 1957

Ultra rare original 1957 US 6-track deep groove mono LP on the seldom seen Signal label (white with black text & green arrow), with 'RVG' (Rudy Van Gelder) and 'ear' stampers in the run-outs, featuring the ex-Parker trumpeter with an all-star cast of Ira Sullivan on Tenor, Tommy Flanagan on Piano, Oscar Pettiford on Bass & Philly Joe Jones or Elvin Jones on Drums. The sleeve is tape reinforced along all three closed edges, keeping it nice and sturdyand free of creasing. There is some authentic weathering to the back panel commensurate with age but nothing that ruins the print. The heavyweight vinyl shows a few spindle marks to indicate play and just some very faint scuffs on side A but it sounds beautiful - what surface noise there is is kept to an absolute minimum and plays through from beginning to end with no faults at all. This was a real pleasure for us to play grade - simply a wonderful album!

Rare 1988 US Capitol label limited edition 2-track shaped 7" vinyl PICTURE DISC, also including Black Bart Blues. Still housed in the original stickered envelope-style PVC sleeve.

The new Record Collector? It’s out. Every month it’s like taking an exam. Except we are allowed to chew gum, chat, copy each other’s answers, use a calculator and look our classmates’ legs absent-mindedly while thinking of what we’re going to write. (Not that our legs are any kind of inspiration whatsoever.) Did we pass? That’s the nice bit – you get to decide. And you don’t have to ink any certificates in your best handwriting. Personally, I think this is a rather strong issue (although I would say that, wouldn’t I?). Fabulous cover feature on Blur; we have a fascinating story about the unknown land that is Irish rock before the Lizzy made it; we steal a breakfast from Bear Family records and find out just how come they make those unbelievable box sets; staying in Germany a moment, there’s a look at the career of Can; we talk to Vince Eager, the Brit rocker Eddie Cochran wanted to produce; and we recall Willy DeVille, the greatest artist that everyone thinks is just a one-hit nit. And that’s just the big stories… elsewhere you’ll find Keith Hudson, Philly soul, Ginger of The Wildhearts, Killing Joke, Marillion, synthpop, Beatles 78s, and so much other stuff that my tiny brain falls out, hits the floor with a tinny clank! and rolls in the dusty dark zone under the fridge just from thinking about it. Record Collector 403 – it’s blue for you and in the shops now.

I received a nice letter from a gentleman who asked about the best way to organise his collection. I’d wondered as much about my own one. Most of the records I want to lay hands on, I can, but from time to time one goes astray and it’s a nightmare. As anyone who collects particular genres where the artist records without even thinking about us poor collectors, it’s a particular problem. What if a singer records singles for 20 different labels in the space of a year, and those labels issue those records with a different artist on the B-side? Do you file under one artist or another? One title or another? Under the label? The producer? The year? There is no logical way of doing it. Or perhaps there is… How do you do it yourself (to recall the great Ian Dury)? All suggestions of more than four letters gratefully received.

What have we been listening to – apart from Ian Shirley humming obscure synthpop tunes while going mad proofreading the 2014 edition of the Rare Record Price Guide? Reviews ed Jason Draper’s been up to his haircut in Roxy Music; every other week another King Crimson album arrives and the aforementioned Ian fills his head with it; I’m enjoying Charly’s 180g vinyl reissue of Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake and I’ve been amusing myself with a Clash 7” and Chickenfoot slaughtering Immigrant Song on YouTube. I’m not quite recommending it, by the way, but here it is all the same…

MOTLEY CRUE Dr Feelgood

1989 UK AUTOGRAPHED 11-track LP for the 5th album from the American heavy metal band, housed in a glossy picture sleeve with the original picture/lyric inner sleeve. The sleeve shows only a little light storage wear and the vinyl looks barely played!
This copy has been dedicated to Mark and fully signed by Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx in black and Tommy Lee in blue marker pen. This signature were obtained at a signing session held at London's Virgin Megastore on 31st October, and comes with a leaflet advertising the session along with the original sales receipt and train ticket for the same day, stunning item which deserves to be displayed.

 

THELONIOUS MONK QUARTET Souvenir Programme

Amazing 1965 UK 20-page programme for his British tour that year with Charlie Rouse, Larry Gayles and Ben Riley, complete with ticket stub for the Royal Festival Hall concert on March 13th 1965.The booklet is packed with biography information, pictures and adverts and a couple of song annotations inside. There is a folded crease in the cover from where it was once held tightly by its adoring owner but this can be forgiven - a glorious vintage slice of American jazz history in Britain!

 

DURAN DURAN Collection Of Roger Taylor Photographs

From the personal collection of former BBC Disk Jockey, Journalist & presenter, Mike Read, we have a great collection of fourteen official black & white press photographs of Roger, including several taken at his wedding, all in pristine condition.

The album that took 'The Boss' from the mid sized venues into arenas and stadiums around the world! A prime example of heartland rock, and its rare you can find music with such honesty, and emotion as this! A timeless piece of work!

DAVID BOWIE Hunky Dory - 1971 UK 11-track orange RCA label LP, housed in a matt sleeve which has  only a few minor storage marks, comes with the original lyric insert. A classic album from 'The Thin White Duke', and the condition on this copy is excellent, which is hard to come by now!

1965 UK 12-track mono vinyl LP, front laminated flipback picture sleeve. The sleeve on this copy shows some mild shelfwear with a degree of discolouration to the unlaminated back, but remains intact & untorn. The vinyl too shows some noticable surface scuffs, spindlemarks around the centre hole & has obviously been played, but still sounds far better than it looks, thanks to the high quality sixties pressing. Upon play testing, we found it to play with just a little surface noise evident in quiet passages and between tracks. A very acceptable copy of this great album at an extremely advantageous price.

 

MIKE OLDFIELD A Virgin Compilation

Rare 1987 US 11-track promotional-only retrospective CD album, including Tubular Bells and ten other standout tracks to reintroduce Mike's back catalogue to American media in advance of his Isalnds album project. Featuring a custom fold-out picture sleeve with complete biography, this official compilation album remains one of Mike's most elusive and renowned worldwide CD releases!

 

ELVIS PRESLEY The Truth About Me

Rare original 1957 UK mail-order only 78rpm single sided 6" shellac disc, originally available via the Weekend Mail magazine/paper, featuring Elvis talking for approximately two minutes as a thank you to fans. The label features the text 'Weekend Mail presents The Truth About Me exclusive by Elvis Presley'. There is no catalogue number as such, but the number stamped in the run-out groove is 13951. No scratches or jumps & still retaining the originalmailing envelope - a fine copy!

KINGDOM COME Galactic Zoo Dossier

Rare classic 1971 UK 14-track LP with A1/B1 matrices, possibly one of the greatest albums ever made by anybody & certainly one of the most important of the early seventies, matt gatefold picture sleeve. This copy comes with the extremely rare double sided fold-out lyric poster that is much harder to find than the album itself, or indeed the proverbial hen's teeth. Apart from some minor signs of age, the sleeve is in excellent condition. The vinyl looks VG/VG+ but plays a very good EX without any problems or intrusive surface noise. The all important poster is in stunning condition and has obviously never been displayed, being free of any tears, pin holes or staining. A very nice complete copy of this landmark release!

 

MIKE OLDFIELD Tubular Bells

Rare original 1973 UK SQ Quadrophonic 2-track vinyl LP with colour 'two virgins' labels, fully compatible with conventional stereo systems, housed in a colour picture sleeve with 'For People With Four Ears' sticker. The sleeve has some light shelfwear to the edges, and the vinyl is excellent with only one surface mark that will not affect play of this incredible sounding record!

 

IRON MAIDEN Powerslave

1984 UK 8-track LP for the 5th album featuring Aces High, 2 Minutes To Midnight and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, housed in a full colour textured picture sleeve complete with the original lyric inner sleeve plus an original merchandise insert. The textured sleeve has no rips or tears,with only some minor creasiong, and the vinyl itself is in excellent condition, with only one or two very fine surface marks that will not affect play of this timeless classic!

How music finally recovered from CDs

Ken Ishiwata – a crucial figure in the development of compact discs – tells Matt Warman the music industry sacrificed quality for cost but is now finally primed to recovery.

From vinyl to cassettes, through to CDs and now to iPods and MP3 players, music has never been more convenient. But does it sound better? In the view of one of hifi’s most respected personalities: no. “Sound quality has gone down for the average user over the last ten to 15 years,” says Ken Ishiwata.

A 30-year veteran of the hifi industry, Ishiwata was the godfather of the first CD players to offer sound close in quality to their analogue predecessors. A key audio engineer at Marantz, he worked at the firm before it was bought by Phillips to bring out the first CD players.

Only now, he says, is digital music turning the corner and beginning to sound as good as vinyl did. He says that at the beginning of each cycle of innovation, the audio industry has consistently sacrificed quality for convenience, and then left others to pick up the pieces.

THE INDO JAZZMEN Ragas And Reflections

1968 UK 4-track stereo LP, an indo-jazz exploito record with Krishna Kumar and Tara [Tambura] Kapur listed on the sleeve playing tabla and sitar and an unnamed small jazz group, most likely related to the Indo-British Jazz Ensemble. This was released after the success of Joe Harriott's fusion series and the influence of Ravi Shankar on popular rock bands of the late sixties. Despite a name & number penned on the back, the sleeve is otherwise excellent and the vinyl looks barely played. Recommended.

 

MADONNA Erotica

Original 1992 UK German-pressed 14-track double LP, housed in a gatefold stickered picture sleeve with 'toe job' image on the reverse plus lyric inners. The vinyl and sleeve are in mint condition.

Great colour picture insert featuring Madonna in a red & black basque style outfit with Japanese text biography and lyrics printed on thereverse - this track only ever got a domestic single release in Japan!

 

KENNY CLARKE FRANCY BOLAND BIG BAND Latin Kaleidoscope

1968 UK 11-track stereo LP, featuring the incredible talents of Ronnie Scott, Dusko Gojkovic, Shake Keane, Johnny Griffin, Sahib Shihab, Sabu Martinez and more. The first side is devoted toGary McFarland's flamboyant title piece and the second side is taken up by Francy's joyful 'Cuban Fever'. The laminated sleeve shows only the lightest of wear and the vinyl looks barely played.
