Only those who pre-ordered the Red Hot Chili Pepper's album 'Stadium Arcadium' through the iTunes Music Store between April 3rd and May 8th, 2006 were eligible to win this iPod. This iPod is unique - it has been custom-engraved with the band's signatures and logos on the back, but like the others produced, it has a manufacturing defect which means it is not useable [Apple have confirmed a manufacturing defect]. It is nonetheless a fantastic momento housed in the original silver embossed 'Apple' box measuring approximately 5½" x 5½" x 1½". Definitely one to admire and display.

DEEP PURPLE & THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Concerto For Group And Orchestra

Rare 1970 original Japanese Warner-Pioneer issue black vinyl stereo LP. With gleaming vinyl this near MINT condition LP has seen very little play over the past 36 years, the green label showing minimal traces of use around the spindle area [in fact side 1 has only 1 spindle mark and side 2 has none!]. The heavyweight gatefold picture sleeve still contains the original insert and 'Now Rock Age' inner advertising sleeve and the very rare 'Rock Age' shaped obi-strip. The sleeve on this copy has only a few signs of age, the obi is in VG condition as has some minor damage on the front including a sticker mark which a past ower has done a good job of patching plus a small nic at the bottom; as already mentioned the vinyl is outstanding - still a great copy of this rare hard to find release.

 

ELVIS PRESLEY My Boy

Extremely rare 1974 UK wide centred export vinyl 7", pressed in the USA because of industrial action in the UK, also featuring Loving Arms, RCA company doe cut paper sleeve. The vinyl on this copy remains in excellent condition with just a couple of light surface scuffs to show for nearly forty years!

DEEP PURPLE Machine Head

Original 1972 UK 7-track Purple Records LP with the 'Gramophone Co' label credit and A1U/B1U matrix numbers, Garrod & Lofthouse laminated gatefold picture sleeve with fold-out lyric insert. The sleeve shows some noticeable wear at the top of the spine and creasing to the laminate in the bottom left corner, plus a few areas of edgewear to reveal its age; the labels have only some minor foxing; the vinyl has just a couple of tiny cosmetic marks andremains in excellent condition - a fantastic copy 40 years on and an album becoming more and more collectable by the year!

This is one busy week. We are beavering away on RC’s 400^th issue, which is a bit difficult as I’m not that skilled at gnawing logs and building dams, plus the river is very cold in the mornings. My partner in crime, Ian Shirley of the Rare Record Price Guide, has produced a piece on 400 rare gems for the issue although as far as I am aware he’s only written 399 thus far. If ever you buy a record from him (not that he ever lets any go), insist on a quarter per cent discount on the basis that this is how he produces his copy. Anyway, we forgive him: he’s stuck into compiling RRPG 2014, so he’s already up to his eyeballs in work.

And he’s still high from the spray glue he’s used to put together the Grannie LP that’s our current vinyl offer. We’ve all been laughing at him for taking on such a mad job, but he’s been proved right: the record is flying out of the doors here, and not just because it’s stoned on glue. We’ve sold over 500 already in a fortnight, which is good going considering the band didn’t manage to flog 99 of them in the first place. What the hell was the music business doing in the early 70s that it could afford to let stuff like this fall by the wayside?

This Saturday, 17 March, I’ll be attending Talking Musical Revolutions, the night of music and spoken word hosted by RC and Daily Mirror critic Gavin Martin. It’s a St Patrick Night’s special and therefore has a loosely Irish theme, although the only thing Irish about me is my name. Jerry Dammers (yes, THAT Jerry Dammers, is there another?) is DJing, there’s Alex Walker, Lyndon Morgans (Songdog), Grassy Noel, Jonny Brown (Band Of Holy Joy), Joby Fox (The Bankrobbers), and the act I’m going along to see, Maddy Carty, whose talent has stunned me every time I’ve heard her. Doors open at 7, performances start at 8pm prompt and it’s at Charterhouse, 38 Charterhouse Street, London EC1M 6JH. Admission is £3. See you there perhaps.

The past couple of newsletters have been full of my travels to distant exotic places such as Harlow and Walthamstow in search of black plastic; haven’t had the time for such ventures this week although I did spot a selection of Dylan albums in a charity shop, including the much-maligned Self Portrait. It’s an album I’ve had an interest in of late and that has been fuelled by two reggae versions of Wigwam. One isn’t much cop, but the other is; I hated it at first, now I really enjoy it. Here it is. The prominent voice you can hear is that of Larry Marshall. Strange I know, and a bit bananas, but it’s a grower.

Super rare original 1969 10-track stereo LP on the pink Island 'eye' logo label with A1/B1 matrices, housed in a matt picture sleeve with striking seafaring image on the reverse. The sleeve has some paperloss along the spine yet the front and back panel prints are unblemished, and despite the edge wear the condition is still excellent. The vinyl is exceptionally clean with the just the lightest signs of spindle wear to indicate play - a fantastic copy of this rarity!

 

MILES DAVIS Bags' Groove

2000 Japanese audiophile pressing of the 1954 7-track mono LP pressed on 200gram heavyweight vinyl and manufactured by Victor Entertainment, starring Milt 'Bags' Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke. Housed in a heavy duty picture card sleeve which replicates the original artwork and album notes, plus the label even keeps the same first issue Prestige design, complete with JVC Cutting Center obi - a beautiful, pristine copy!
