Fully back in the schwing! of it now, frittering away my hard-earned on eBay and in shops, including…. gulp… a new reggae shop which has risen as most of the others have closed. Neatly tucked away in the basement of BM at 25, D’Arblay Street, Soho, London, W1F 8JE, it’s run by Papa Face, a man who has spent years as David Rodigan’s microphone chatter at live dates (and seen here playing unreleased Bob Marley and Dennis Brown mixes). Early days yet, but I’d suggest that the West End has room for a reggae shop, as it had barely had one since the great Daddy Kool moved out, and I’ll be supporting it.

I’ve been continuing my voyage into R&B, picking up a Fats Domino Imperial 45 on coloured vinyl and Ernie Field’s frankly ridiculous version of In The Mood on Rendezvous, which luckily has the unfeasibly twangy Christopher Columbus lurking on the flip. Here’s a clip – but be warned, the dancer’s gyrations may drive you into an uncontrollable frenzy of lust… or not.

Still more response to our British Soul Power feature in the current issue. Delighted to see that everyone still cares about this kind of music. Letters are still coming in asking for recognition for their favourites and remembering hot nights in packed ballrooms dancing the hitch hike to Jimmy James, or just standing, tongue hanging out, transfixed by Sharon Tandy’s mile-long legs. Some of your letters will feature in the next issue of the mag, as will those prompted by our RC Investigates story on counterfeit records. I must admit, I set out to buy a counterfeit once, but it turned out to be fake. I had the same problem with a pirate 45: Johnny Kidd wasn’t even on it.

Upcoming in the next issue: a look at collectable hip-hop LPs and a word or two about Depeche Mode, and The Misunderstood’s unravelling… erm, unravelled. Plus we investigate insuring that valuable vinyl and I review a 45 that could easily be an anthem for the magazine – or at least, it would be if it had been performed by a rockabilly singer over a Motown prog beat played by a bunch of mods who were about to magic mushroom into a psychedelic cloud over a punk club.

WOODSTOCK 3 Days Of Peace & Music

One of the most astonishing & delightful items to ever pass through my hands & difficult to describe in a way to do it true justice, but here goes ... In 1969 the world witnessed an event that, for a short period of time, seemed to display a new hope to a younger generation raised on the horrors of Korea, Vietnam & the Cuban missile crisis. That was the three day event held at Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York, between August 15th & 18th that year entitled 'The Woodstock Music And Art Fair'. Events at the festival have been documented at great length, the film & soundtrack have been released, so that part is well known. What is less well known is that the organisers produced a fifty four page programme for the event, lovingly crafted in detail & printed on high quality paper stock. What we have here is one of those programmes that, apart from some incredibly minor rubbing to the front & back cover & a little rust staining at the staples, is in astonishing near 'as new' condition. This is NOT a repro, but a 1969 original & the first one that we have ever seen!

Measures 16" x 16" - framed and glazed. A great item to display.

 

MADONNA Blond Ambition World Tour

1990 UK 52-page 15" x 12" glossy full colour tour programme with gold printed rice paper title pages, including lots of fab & sexxxy photographs, biography, tour credits and intact merchandise insert. Great cover shot of a blonde Madonna. The cover has some very minor spine and light storage wear in a couple of spots, but the inner pages are all in superb condition.

 

THE BEATLES Beatles (U.S.A.) Ltd.

1966 US 36-page tour programme for their LAST tour. This is the rarest tour programme, even in the US. Measuring 12" square with a great colour cover it is packed with rare photos by Robert Whitaker with six pages devoted to each individual Beatle. Apart from some very light scuffing on the cover, this copy is superb & free from any rips, tears or creases - An incredible item!)

MILES DAVIS The Complete Live At The Plugged Nickel 1965

Rare 1992 Japanese issue 39-track SEVEN CD box set featuring the classic recordings made over 22nd & 23rd December 1965 with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Tony Williams, including twenty minutes of newly discovered music, remixed & remastered from the original analogue master tapes. Each disc is housed in their own jewel case with picture sleeve, presented in a sturdy 6" x 5" x 3" box with metal title plaque on the end of the lid with full tracklisting on the back. Critics have called this 'the best Jazz ever recorded' and it is certainly a high point in Miles' canon with the entire band firing on all six - Essential stuff & long out of print.

Scarce 2007 US limited edition & numbered Lithograph for the band's 18th full length studio album 'Snakes & Arrows'. Now long out of print, this stunning litho print was originally only available exclusively through the band's official online merchandiser rushbacktage.com. Printed on heavy art paper, measuring 18" x 24", the paper is uncoated to provide a high-end aesthetic quality. Hand-numbered in the lower right hand corner, this copy is #357 - a tasty proposition for any Rush collector being that it's within the first 500 made! The artwork features the wonderful album cover graphics [painted by Harish Johari] and the listing of every date from the Snakes & Arrows World Tour 2007 - A beautiful item for any fan of the mighty trio, perfect for framing!

 

GENTLE GIANT Gentle Giant

1978 Japanese 7-track Vertigo 'flying saucer' label vinyl LP of the 1970 debut album, the innovative first album from the Shulman brothers and co, including the big-riff laden opener Giant and staple, longterm live set regulars Funny Ways and Isn't It Quiet And Cold, featuring the late first drummer Martin Smith, housed in a wonderfully reproduced picture sleeve boasting the original 'Giant with band in hands' illustration. Complete with Japanese/English text lyric insert and wide green'Rock Super Collection' obi-strip. The sleeve is in superb shape with very little evidence of storage bar a miniscule tear to the side of the obi and a negligible opening edge crease. The vinyl within retains a wonderful lustre with bright, clean labels and despite a light mottling effect [which has occured during pressing] and a tiny cosmetic mark to side 1 it plays beautifully overall. The superb beginnings of one of the pioneering prog rock bands, eclectic enough to have a song that spells 'Dracula' backwards. Yes, Genesis, Crimson, VDGG and just general quality prog fans must own this!

2011 US Deluxe Bundle available with pre-orders of the 11-track CD album, which includes a jigsaw puzzle, an exclusive postcard set including one hand-printed and signed by Lenka. Clash Of The Pointy Titans? The Queens Of Pop, Kylie And Madonna Rumoured To Duet!

The duet, which is rumoured to be part of an ITV special on the Australian artist, is one of many reported pairings said to feature, including others with Jason Donovan, Nick Cave, Robbie Williams and sister Dannii Minogue.

Kylie has, however, taken to Twitter and cryptically tweeted about the big duet: “it's just a rumour, but of course it would be amazing!! maybe one day:) #MadonnaKylieDuet”

Scarce original 1975 Japanese-only Dark Horse label 2-track 7" vinyl single co-produced by GEORGE HARRISON, featuring English and Japanese versions. The single comes in a die-cut company sleeve with two fold-out inserts – one brown-tinted & white, and one full-colour which opens out to reveal the score of the song with Japanese lyrics. The inserts have only some very light creasing, but remain in near mint condition and the vinyl is flawless. An amazingcopy of this extremely rare item and the first we have ever had to offer for sale!

 

REM Good King Wenceslas

Rare original 1989 US 2-track limited edition Christmas fan-club only vinyl 7" single which also includes Academy Fight Song and is housed inside a unique lightly textured fold-out picture sleeve which opens out into a fantastic 21" x 15" poster featuring a great close-up live black and white photo of the band.
