Lady Gaga gags Lady Goo Goo with injunction

Lady Gaga has successfully taken out an injunction against the creator of manufactured character Lady Goo Goo - preventing any music being officially released from the virtual pop star.

Goo Goo, created by global kids community site Moshi Monsters, enjoyed around a million views per month on YouTube for would-be hit The Moshi Dance.

However, it looks like that success may now never be reflected in the official singles chart. Goo Goo is one of Moshi Monsters' 52 'Moshling' characters. The site, which is owned by games developer Mind Candy, is aimed at the six-to-twelve-year old market and has 50 million registered users worldwide.

Rare & Complete 1998 'The Beatles Collection' London Transport Routemaster Double Decker Bus Phone measuring approx 8" x 12" x 6½", with illuminated 'Help' era advertising artwork picture billboard of the fab-four with facsimile signatures, lamppost light, full Routermaster Bus livery including headlights and interior lights mounted on Belisha Beacon crossing Beatles base with 'Collection Series' title plaque featuring light function on/off switches. The phone handset cradles neatly as the top deck of the Bus and includes push button dialing, last number redial, ringer on/off switch and tone/pulse dialing. Complete with the original 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' outer picture box with instruction manual, power unit, connection chord, adaptors and extension unit. The outer box is showing just a few light creases/tears to the opening flaps but is otherwise in great shape whilst the phone itself is in tip-top condition. As well as having a demo light function, when the phone rings all lights can be set to flash for an illuminated feast for the eyeballs, adding to the nostalgia this visually stunning and tremendously scarce collectable already creates - unique and paramount fun!

 

TALK TALK After The Flood

Rare limited edition 1991 French 6-track 3-CD picture disc singles pack, including New Grass and Ascension Day, all three singles taken from the masterpiece, Laughing Stock, Talk Talk's final album. Housed in a custom made, numbered 10" x 5" fold-out pack. A beautifully presented decorative package for the Talk Talk collector, SEALED from new in custom stickered shrink.

 

 

IRON MAIDEN Flight 666: The Film

Rare official 2009 US UMe label advance promotional double NTSC DVD-R acetate set issued exclusively to reviewers before the release. Featuring the movie which was recorded during the historic 'Somewhere Back InTime' World tour in February & March of 2008, which had the band circumnavigating the globe in just 45 days in a specially customised Boeing 757 airliner, piloted by lead singer Bruce Dickinson, includes live footage and interviews with band,crew and fans. The second disc features the whole live set with a track filmed in each of the 16 different cities. On the screen when viewing is the 'For Review Purposes Only' & 'Property of Phantom Music Ltd.' text, this is there throughout both discs. Custom printed discs with the plane image and 'Phantom Music' & 'UMe' logos.

I’ve got friends who regard me as a lunatic for buying records. They can’t understand why I’d want to clutter up the house with sheets of black plastic encased in cardboard. After all, why not invest in an MP3 player and free up 40 acres of floor space occupied by vinyl? Actually, I am not the sort of idiot who thinks a laptop is another name for a cat. And I do own an MP3 player, but it’s full of vinyl that I’ve ‘ripped’ on to it – what’s the point? But sometimes there’s an advantage in being a Luddite. The newspaper – yes, an old-fashioned paper, not an cyberspace transmission – tells me that PlayStations have been under cyber attack, and that the Blackberry has been knackered for days owing to some wee glitch. I am glad to report that my portable entertainment system (no, no, not that one missus) of two Technics SL 1200s, a mixer and a prohibitively weighty box of 45s is still fully functional. It might not be completely convenient to carry with me on the daily commute but at least it doesn’t depend on anything other than 240 volts delivered via a 13 amp plug to work. As someone once said of The Troggs, it’s so far behind, it’s in front. In fact, some experts in technology believe that vinyl will be the last survivor of our musical era: it is delivered by mechanical means and long after the current computer musical formats have been made redundant and CDs have disintegrated, someone will be able to create the means to play these funny bits of black plastic to hear what it was shook our groove thang back in the early 2000s. The future is apparently vinyl. Who’d have thought it…

Nice to hear that our Elvis-fronted issue is selling well in the shops – the King still rules OK. We’re lining up some goodies for the next magazine, including a fascinating piece about Lee Dorsey which I am just dying to let you see… but I can’t. Yet! Plus we have piles of prog in that issue too, including the chance to buy an unreleased masterpiece, plus major features about two of the true wizards of that branch of the music we love and a shorter story about Dream Theater, modern masters of progressive rock.

It was great to witness Paul Jones in fine vocal and verbal form at the opening event for the National Blues Archive last week, and I am delighted to have been asked to take my Technics along to represent RC with a DJ slot at the organisation’s fundraiser, The Blues Legacy Festival, to be held in Leyton, London E10 on, 27 November, from 2pm until late. We’ll let you know more details as they arrive…

Rare & limited 1978 French issue of the 1970 5-track LP pressed on BLUE VINYL, with yellow & green 'Pathe Marconi' Harvest labels and gatefold picture sleeve with correct 'DC 108' goldsticker on the back. The sleeve reveals just a touch of light edge wear along the top but nothing major and the vinyl looks unplayed - a great copy and must have for any collector!

 

OASIS Columbia [Demo]

Rare 1993 UK original Creation Records single sided promotional-only vinyl 12", limited to just 510 copies and distributed to radio & media for Christmas 1993, long before their Supersonic debut single was released in April'94. This is the genuine original first issue, with correct matrix number CTP8A and DAMONT AUDIO L.T.D. etching. Housed inside its original black sleeve complete with the even rarer hype sticker. This copy has remained in hibernation since itwas created; it is genuinely MINT & UNPLAYED. A superb and rarely seen collectable that is one of the top OASIS rarities, and historically it is the first vinyl release ever to bear their name!

 

THE YARDBIRDS Shape Of Things

Very rare 1966 UK 'A' label demonstration sample vinyl 7" for the single release, with intact original four prong centre & release date of 25.2.66 on the label, also featuring You're A Better Man Than I, Columbia company die cut paper sleeve.

 

 

BEE GEES Too Much Heaven - The Songs Of Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb

Rare 2002 US limited edition 50-track promotional only THREE CD album set. This is the prototype for the 3-CD set, and is one of only 50 copies produced. Features 32 Bee Gee classics, and 18 tracks written by the brothers and recorded by other artists. The CDs have a black playing surface and are custom printed with a picture of a different brother on each disc, and the set is housed in a fat double CD case with a custom picture sleeve, tracklisting back insert + 1-page press release.

Happy Birthday Paul Simon - 70 today

Paul Simon, who is 70 today, will mark 25th anniversary of Graceland album with new tour backed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. 

Paul is planning a special 'Graceland' tour in 2012 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the most influential albums of the past three decades.

Next year's tour will coincide with the release of a new box set of the album and Simon told Billboard.com that he intends to reunite musicians who toured with him in 1987, among them the South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The album won a Grammy as Record of the Year.

Three months ago, Simon travelled back to South Africa with his band and played with trumpeter Hugh Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo for a crowd of 300 people. Director Joe Berlinger, whose previous music documentaries include one on Metallica, shot the concert for a film that will be included in a 25th anniversary box set. Berlinger's film is also expected to be submitted to film festivals.

In the centre is a custom-engraved dedication plate with facsimile autographs from each band member.

 

THE WHO My Generation

Elusive 1965 UK red Brunswick label demonstration sample 2-track 7" vinyl single - a truly magnificent 2-track demo for, arguably, the band's classic signature track, My Generation; also featuring the non-album track, ShoutAnd Shimmy. This extremely rare demo - much rarer than Beatles demo recordings, as fewer were manufactured - is pressed on the red Brunswick label, featuring clear silver 'demonstration sample not for sale' text, rubber stamped number and intact push-out centre; and has been kept in beautiful condition. Presented in a red and white die-cut label sleeve, this is a wonderful piece of The Who recording history, that proves very hard to find - hurry, it won't hang around!

 

THE WHO A Legal Matter

Very rare 1966 UK red Brunswick label demonstration sample 2-track 7" vinyl single - a simply stunning 2-track demo, taken from the iconic mod band's debut studio album, My Generation; also featuring the non-album track, Instant Party. This incredibly rare demo - much rarer than Beatles demo recordings, as fewer were manufactured - is pressed on the red Brunswick label, featuring clear silver 'demonstration sample not for sale' text, rubber stamped number andintact push-out centre; and has been kept in stunning condition. Presented in a red and white die-cut label sleeve, this is a truly fantastic piece of The Who recording history, get it while you can!

 

THE BEATLES We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper

Extremely rare 1965 UK double 'A' label demonstration vinyl 7" for the single release, with release date of 3.12.65 on the intact original four prong centre, Parlophone company die cut paper sleeve. The vinyl on this copy is in spectacular condition with just a couple of light paper scuffs visible on close inspection preventing a mint grading. This is without doubt the best condition you will ever find of this rare demo!

JAMES BROWN The Payback

Original & totally bad-to-the-bone 1973 US 8-track double LP on red Polydor 'JB Production' picture labels and 'Sterling' machine stamped in the runouts. The Payback was originally scheduled as the soundtrack to the blaxploitation movie Hell Up In Harlem, but was bizarrely rejected by the director as 'not James Brown enough'! Obviously that man had cloth ears, as this is now considered a high point in JB's career and a landmark funk album, featuring cyclical grooves and jamming with edges of softer blues creeping in. The gatefold sleeve is near mint and the vinyl mint.

 

VELVET UNDERGROUND The Velvet Underground

Rare 1990 French-only Polydor limited edition 37-track 4-CD box set including the albums The Velvet Underground & Nico [originally released in 1966], White Light/White Heat [1967], The Velvet Underground[1969] and V.U. [1985], housed in 12" x 12" French-only picture box, this copy is in MINT condition throughout with 3 of the disc within still SEALED in their original factory shrink from new, therefore unplayed!

 

PAUL MCCARTNEY The New World Collection

Rare and complete 1993 UK limited edition individually numbered box set containing three CD albums - Wings Greatest, Unplugged and Off The Ground which are housed in original picture sleeves, plus specialtour T-shirt [extra-large], enamel tour badge + 32-page 12" x 12" glossy tour programme in titled brown paper bag. 'Later... With Mastodon'!

Heavy Metal Leviathans Mastodon have announced they will be making a live appearance on the BBC's 'Later... With Jools Holland' - an exciting rare moment of live TV for the world of Metal!

Timed almost as perfectly as drummer Bran Dailor's lavish beats the show falls right on the trail of the release of new album The Hunter - arguably the band's most commercially riffy yet still dynamic and textured album-to-date.

The unlikely event is due to air on BBC2 on Tuesday October 18 at 10pm and the again on Friday 21st for the full extended hour long version. From the The Jools Holland website: "On Tuesdays, the show is broadcast live for half an hour; Friday night's extended version offers another chance to see performances from Tuesday's show, along with an additional half hour of music and chat."  - We say less chat and more Mastodon!

NIRVANA/VARIOUS Do You Love Me?

Included on a rare 1992 French 11-track Kiss tribute LP entitled 'Hard To Believe - A Kiss Covers Compilation' - this was the only Nirvana recording to feature Jason Everman on guitar. The gatefold picture sleeveshows little of its age and the vinyl looks barely played, if at all.

 

OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN Mon Amour, Mon Impossible Amour

Extremely rare 1975 French only wide centred 7" vinyl single, also including Home Ain't Home Anymore, unique picture sleeve. Both sleeve & vinyl are in fantastic MINT condition, having been stored away for over thirty five years, away from smoke & light & are therefore just as you would have bought them in 1975. You will not find a better copy anywhere than this!

 

OASIS Vox Amplifier Box

Mega rare 1996 UK promotional-only wooden box in the shape of a Vox amplifier which contains nine CD singles and interview CD complete with booklets. This official promo item is also housed in the original 'OASIS' logo'd outer brown cardboard mailer box which has just a small 1" tear along the top edge but is otherwise in MINT condition! Only 100 were rumoured to have been made as a thank you to staff who had worked with the band. A truly stunning item.

 

U2 Pop

Amazing set of TWO 72" x 30" 1997 US official promotional only glossy colour posters issued to promote the album and Pop Mart tour. Each poster features three different 30" x 24" images, with perforation marks between each one. They depict the colourful 'U2 Pop Mart Tour '97 logo, the complete 4-picture album cover artwork plus an enlargement of a different band members face made up of coloured dots and shading on a silver background. The posters were designed to be displayedone above the other [giving a total measurement of 60" x 72"], but each image could be separated if desired. A truly stunning set!

Original 1969 UK 11-track STEREO vinyl LP on the three colour Reprise 'steamboat' label, which came hot on the heels of Music In A Doll's House's critical acclaim. The striking black and white front laminate flipbackpicture sleeve is showing some creasing to the corners/edge of the laminate with just a little wear evident to the flipbacks while the vinyl is in excellent condition. A great copy considering its age of well over 40 years!

The new issue of RC hits the shops any moment now, and that’s always an exciting time for us. While I often warble on about the features in the mag, I want to focus on some of the smaller, tucked away gems in the new edition. Spencer Grady, our production editor, has sorted out some fantastic competition prizes, including Sandy Denny and Fotheringay merchandise, Stooges DVDs, and for clever crossword completers, The Smiths’ eight-LP box set which includes artwork – and there’s only 15 of these in the whole world. Our Rocking The Box section recalls Marc Bolan on the London Bridge show on ITV in March 1975, an event I don’t remember – not, alas, because I was too young. We review the reissues of six albums from The Jesus And Mary Chain, new albums from Ryan Adams (also the subject of an interview this month) and Brett Anderson and look at Jimi Hendrix’s Winterland. Chris Spedding remembers his favourite record shop; we reveal the flexis that have been sending bidders bananas on eBay, and drool over Duran Duran’s remarkable All You Need Is Now box set, which is so classy, we hardly dare look at it. We’re also scared to look at Lemmy for different reasons, but one person who definitely isn’t is Mick Stevenson, our featured Collector, who has a Motörhead stash that will be the envy of thousands.

No longer with us, sadly: Sylvia Robinson, boss of Sugar Hill; Leonard Dillon, leader of The Ethiopians; and, we heard yesterday, the great Bert Jansch, Pentangler, composer of the haunting Needle Of Death, populariser of Davey Graham’s Angie, and whose Jack Orion still sounds like one of the most moving folk albums of the 60s to my ears and a home recording to boot. Condolences to friends and family of all of the above; we’ll be including tributes in the next issue of Record Collector.

RC has been doing a bit of sniffing around the shops lately, and there is still vinyl out there if you’re prepared to put the person-hours in! Spent a happy evening digging at a truly old-school black music shop, Direct Impact, at 158 Hoe Street, Walthamstow (07939 315928), and turned up some nice R&B and soul  tunes and a little bit of reggae. Funny thing is, I’ve spent decades looking through shops like this, yet now it feels like nostalgia – how often can you actually go in a record shop that’s not a dedicated collector’s outlet and find something, or not know just what it is you are going to turn up? The music’s still out there, but it’s spaced further apart; there used to be 12 such shops within two miles of there, at a rough guess, but now this shop is a rarity. There’s no guarantee you’ll find anything at any shop, but the possibility that you might is what keeps us all in the hunt, and I’m delighted to say that I did.
