R.E.M. have announced that Warner Bros. Records will release their upcoming new album, 'Collapse Into Now', on March 7th, 2011.

For 'Collapse Into Now', R.E.M. re-teamed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacknife Lee, who produced the band's acclaimed previous album 'Accelerate'. Lee is also noted for his work on albums by U2, Snow Patrol, The Hives, and indie stalwarts Kasabian, Editors, Aqualung, and Bloc Party. R.E.M. and Lee recorded the album in New Orleans at the Music Shed and in Berlin at the famed Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie's 'Heroes', U2's 'Achtung Baby', and Iggy Pop's 'Lust for Life', were made. Additional recording and mixing was done at the venerable Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

Mega rare 1982 US official 'Mutual Broadcasting System Inc.' twelve vinyl LP radio show box set, originally for broadcast between 30th September & 3rd October - a massive twelve hours of music & interviews takingyou through their entire career, all twelve albums are presented in a unique high quality 12" picture box showing just light discolouration/evidence of storage whilst the contents are all superb and come complete with the original cue sheets including programme set lists, run-times and clearance card - A fantastic set! The Operas of Modest Mussorgsky

 

Modest Mussorgsky wrote two Operas in his tragically short life, Boris Godunov and Khovanshchina.  Of the two, Boris Godunov is the best known, being a historical epic cast in a similar vein to Shakespeare’s Macbeth.  Telling the Tale of Boris Godunov, who succeeded the Tsar Fyodor the Bellringer after (perhaps) assassinating the only boy heir, only to be ousted in turn by another pretender to the throne claiming to be the very heir who Godunov had conspired to have murdered.

Boris Godunov exists in four principle forms – the first of 1868 which was rejected by the Tsarist censors and is almost never performed, the second of 1872 which was rewritten by Mussorgsky and is considered the definitive “authentic” version, the third which was rearranged by Mussorgsky’s friend Rimsky-Korsakov after his death to make it align more readily with contemporary international “taste” and the fourth, modern, rearrangement by Shostakovich.  All the different versions have their supporters and detractors and many performances end up being hybrids of the different arrangements, but the prior to the Shostakovich publishing his arrangement in 1960, the Rimsky-Korsakov version was easily the most widely performed.

Khovanshchina by contrast, was not finished at all at the time of Mussorgsky’s death.  Again, it is a historical epic, describing a time during Peter the Greats reign when Russia was nearly torn apart by religious strife and again, Rimsky-Korsakov stepped in to complete the score.  Khovanshchina also had trouble with the censors, this time because of its revolutionary flavour, but ironically this in turn made it popular in post revolutionary Russia.

We have both these landmark pieces of Russian national opera work captured on Decca vinyl boxed sets.  Our Boris Godunov is published in 1972 on the purple Decca SET series.  It is a performance of the Rimsky-Korsakov version performed by the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan.  By contrast, our Khovanshchina is an earlier mono recording from 19555 on the orange and silver LXT label series, this time performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the National Opera, Belgrade conducted by Kreshimir Baranovich.  Both are in fantastic mint condition.

Jimi Hendrix plectrum mosaic artwork on show...

A mosaic of Jimi Hendrix made from more than 5,000 different coloured Fender guitar plectrums is to be auctioned later.

The portrait, created by Manchester artist Ed Chapman, will be unveiled at a charity event at London's Abbey Road Studios.

The 39-year-old said the 120cm x 100cm work took him several days to complete.

Justin Bieber shot dead... in CSI

It was the scene millions have tuned in to see last night in the USA. Justin Bieber was gunned down in CSI.

Bieber reprised his role as bomb expert Jason McCann in the episode 'Targets of Obsession'.

Night Shift Assistant Supervisor Nick Stokes has the honour of ridding teen terror McCann (Bieber) in
a bloody shoot-out after he shoots another police officer and then refuses to surrender.

Bieber told Star and Style magazine "I'm not a bad person so it's funny to play a bad person."  His character appeared in the first show of the season in September, 2010 in the USA. The final episode of
Season 11 of CSI will air in the United States on March 10, 2011.

2010 US Rhino Handmade limited edition 19-track 2-CD set comprising of the original 8 track album originally produced and financed by Gerry Rafferty who'd toured with the Thompsons in 1980, this was at the time shelved, rerecorded the following year with producer Joe Boyd's independent Hannibal Records with several musicians from the Rafferty sessions—guitarist Simon Nicol, drummer Dave Mattacks, and bassist Pete Zorn—andrecorded six songs from the previous sessions plus two new songs. The Bonus disc documents the tumultuous tour with 11 never before released live performances, all but one taken from shows in San Francisco and Santa Cruz, California. Housed in a hardcover book with 40 pages of liner notes & photos with this copy still sealed.

Berlin Philly set to (classically) Rock London!

 

Arguably the greatest orchestra in the World right now, the Berlin Philharmonic lead by controversial British conductor Simon Rattle will be performing five concerts in London next week.

The concerts will include Mahler’s third and fourth symphony, symphonies by Haydn and Schubert and a new commission by Toshio Hosokawa. 

Unfortunately, the tickets sold out a long time ago – which is a real pity as the Berlin Philharmonic is noted for the visceral, exciting nature of their performances, which really needs to be experienced first hand.  However, if like me, you missed out on attending a concert, you can at least explore the fantastic legacy of classical recordings made by this illustrious Orchestra on our own, humble website.

Florence And The Machine are to start record their album in 'April or May'

The 'Dog Days Are Over' group have been writing their second album since autumn last year, and guitarist Rob Ackroyd said the group are now poised to enter the famous Abbey Road studio in London
where The Beatles recorded much of their material.

He said: "Work on the second album has begun with producer Paul Epworth and there is talk of booking out Abbey Road for a month in April or May to record. Which is nice."

The musician also revealed that while he and group leader Florence Welch see eye to eye on most musical genres, but finds himself at odds when it comes to her taste in mainstream songs.

He added to Gibson.com: "Florence's and my taste in music often overlap in harmonious fashion; we're both big fans of hip-hop and American indie.

"But she's also a big fan of unadulterated pop music, which cuts through me like a knife."

The guitarist - who has also recently been working with Pixie Geldof, daughter of former Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof on her new band Violet - also told how he had managed to meet his rock guitar hero through playing with the machine.

2010 US limited edition 6-CD box set - In October 1989 the Grateful Dead performed two special shows in Hampton, both were recorded with the state-of-the-art Le Mobile remote recordingtruck, this set features both shows remastered on to HDCD specifications & spread over six CDs. This collector's set comes packaged in a wooden replica of a cigar box and is filled with all sorts of goodies, from a photo-laden historical essayto various pieces of cool memorabilia from the time, this has not been opened and still has the intact paper seal.

Shakira has been named the Harvard Foundation's 2011 Artist of the Year

The Columbian singer will receive 'the Foundation's most prestigious medal' in recognition of her music and charity work at the annual Cultural Rhythms festival which is held at Sanders Theatre on the grounds of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on February 26th 2011.

Acknowledging the world's most celebrated artists, scientists and leaders for their humanitarian efforts, the initiative is the college's centre for intercultural arts and sciences.

The foundation's director S. Allen Counter said Shakira had been chosen to receive the accolade this year because of her musical contributions to culture and her work helping children in impoverished areas such as Haiti.

He said: 'The students and faculty of the Harvard Foundation are honoured to present multi-platinum artist Shakira with the 2011 Artist of the Year award. Her contributions to music and distinguished history of creativity have been applauded by people throughout the world, and she is greatly admired worldwide for her humanitarian efforts through her Barefoot Foundation.'

Kiss get into the funeral business with coffin design

We have had more stories over the last five years on new Kiss related merchandise than any other artist. The group, and their licensing organization, have not seen a product that they couldn't be used to promote the Kiss brand from clothing to garden gnomes.
