THE FALL 'Last Night At The Palais: Live At Hammersmith Palais April 1st 2007' [Release Date 24/08/2009]

CD/DVD: Historic live recording from The Fall's Reformation Post TLC tour of 2007. * Adds a DVD of the complete concert documenting the final show at London's famous Hammersmith Palais. * DVD adds the Bonus 'Reformation' Video. * Sleeve notes by Fall expert Daryl Easlea On January 21st 2007, the Hammersmith Palais, one of London's most historic music venues was condemned to suffer the fate of other prestigious halls in the capital and in the name of homogenous urban progress, close its doors to be converted into an office complex and restaurant. By a strange quirk of fate, the last band to ever play there was The Fall. Their Hammersmith gig on 1st April had been booked as part of their 20 date UK spring tour to promote the release of their 27th album, 'Reformation Post TLC'. Never one to play a greatest hits set, Smith with this seven-piece though short-lived line-up which mixed the US and UK wings of the band (supporting Smith and his keyboard-playing wife Elena, were guitarists Tim Presley and Pete Greenway, bassists Rob Barbato and Dave "The Eagle" Spurr and the ever-smiling Opheo McCord on drums) delivered a mainly recent, forthcoming and unreleased set of songs to the capacity crowd. The only concessions to The Fall's 80's & 90's repertoire being 'Right Place, Wrong Time' and 'White Lightning'. Whilst not quite the sending-off that some die-hard Palais supporters had visualised (one stage invader ralied against the lack of recognition to the occasion from Smith and co.), it was certainly a memorable one which is thankfully captured here in The Fall's inimitable way!

Now serving his life sentence at Corcoran State Prison, his publicist has revealed that the Wall Of Sound pioneering producer has been passed a note by fellow in-mate and convicted murderer, the notorious Charles Manson, requesting a musical collaboration. I can just see it up in lights...

Bananarama's story starts a new chapter this summer with the release of the new single 'Love Comes' - an exciting, modern new single with both feet planted on the dancefloor. The single is representative of the upcoming dance-centered album 'Viva'. The band's new self-penned material is, once again, the result of Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward identifying the right collaborators for the right point in their career - something that they did so successfully in the 80s with Jolley & Swain ['Shy Boy', 'Cruel Summer', 'Robert De Niro's Waiting'] and Stock Aitken & Waterman ['Venus', 'Love In The First Degree', 'I Heard A Rumour', 'I Want You Back'].

In 2009, they've found a perfect foil in Ian Masterson, a producer whose credits range from Pet Shop Boys to Girls Aloud and whose instinctive grasp of the Bananarama spirit has resulted in some extraordinarily good music on this new album. Sara says "working with Ian has been a revelation - we did a couple of tracks with him on the last album and he's really in tune with what we're into and with what's happening in the outside world. Some producers hit a formula and just churn out the same old stuff; with Ian it's been so enjoyable." Indeed, working with just one producer is in itself remarkable in the modern pop landscape.

Bananarama are now signed to Fascination [Universal Records], meaning that Keren and Sara are labelmates of Girls Aloud and The Saturdays on an imprint which has become the unofficial home of the UK girlgroup [and they're probably old enough to be their Nans!]. It's a great fit, but while Bananarama's style filters through the pop generations, Sara's right to feel a sense of distance from what she helped inspire. "I never looked at us as a 'girl band'," Sara remembers. "We were just a band in the same way as The Cure were a band or Wham were a band." To this end Bananarama appeared in NME as frequently as Smash Hits - a double-pronged attack on the public's sense.

Of the new tunes, 'Seventeen' is an undulating, low-slung electro number which pleads "kiss me like you do in my dreams, make me feel like I was seventeen", then there's the seductive, ice-cold 'Extraordinary' and the smashing single 'Love Comes' - a dancefloor belter with no strings attached.

DVD: This fascinating DVD and book gets to the very heart of the Snow Patrol phenomenon. With some of the group's best known tunes as its backdrop, the programme presents a unique critical review of the Glasgow-based band who first hit the charts in 2003. Presenter Christian Stevenson tells the story of the Snow Patrol's career so far, while respected session musician and musicologist Les Davidson examines the songs that took the group into rock's big league. Also giving their opinions and insights are Stef D'Andrea of Jeepster Recordings, the band's original record label, group expert and radio DJ Marsha Shandur, plus journalist and music promoter Laura Thorne, making this a complete study of a great pop band. The book The 72 page book features a detailed biography of Snow Patrol, illustrated with rare colour photographs.

Rare Erasure Remixes Finally Set For Release

Erasure have announced details of Erasure.Club due for release on the 10th of August.

Originally available in 1990 as three separate promo-only 12"s, fan demand has prompted release of these remastered rare club remixes on one CD. Featuring remixes of 'Push Me Shove Me' from Jon Marsh of The Beloved and Senseless from the album 'Wonderland' [1986] and a remix of 'Sometimes from The Circus' [1987] by Danny Rampling. 'Ship Of Fools' is given the remix treatment by Dr Alex Paterson and Thrash from The Orb.

JAMES YORKSTON & THE BIG EYES FAMILY PLAYERS 'Folk Songs' [Release Date 10/08/2009]

CD I 2-CD+DVD I LP: James Yorkston returns in the company of The Big Eyes Family Players with a new album of traditional songs from the length and breadth of the Great Britain and Ireland, and one tune from Galicia in Spain. After a decade which has seen folk music morph into nu-folk, mobile phone-ad folk, mortgage-folk, smoothie-folk and so on, Yorkston has reached back into the tradition of song and place and drawn a line in the sand. In May, a new team of musicians were drawn from the Big Eye Players and other like minded souls, to record the Analogue Cat Sessions included on the limited DVD. Recorded over three days the sessions see the band revisit songs from the original 'Folk Songs' album and other traditional songs that James has either played live or recorded as b-sides. What resulted is a vibrant and alive collection of songs, ringing with new arrangements and energy. The session was filmed and six songs from the CD are included on the accompanying DVD. Also featured on the DVD is a short film about the session recording, filmed by Institute For Eyes. To round it all off James Yorkston himself made a 3min short of the recording.

Celebrate with Madonna

Only 9 weeks until Madonna releases her 'Celebration' hits album. Apparently there will be 2 new recordings [including a collaboration with Lil Wayne plus the title track produced by Paul Oakenfold]. Billboard have further information as does her official website. We have some details from the label and it looks like a CD, double CD set and a DVD will be released along with a Vinyl version! So watch this space.
