MARMADUKE DUKE
'Duke Pandemonium' CD Release Date 11/05/2009
http://991.com/buy/productinformation.aspx?StockNumber=468714
Marmaduke Duke, the self-created surreal musical world of enigmatic Scottish duo The Atmosphere and The Dragon, two frontmen better known as Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro and JP Reid of Sucioperro. 'Duke Pandemonium' follows on from the release of single 'Kid Gloves' in March and the hit 'Rubber Lover' on 20th April and is part two of a mythological musical album trilogy, performed and produced by The Atmosphere and The Dragon in 24 hours, and mixed by Rich Costey [Muse, Mars Volta, Bloc Party]. The 16th Century Duke, inspired by a trilogy of unfinished books written by a Portuguese man befriended by the Scottish duo, is perceived by The Atmosphere and The Dragon - the Duke's henchmen - as a wandering soul, a personification of man's most primitive and often under-explored impulses, and 'Duke Pandemonium' is the Duke's vision of a hedonistic and aberrant disco-party. In the debut album 'The Magnificent Duke', The Duke charted his slow descent into psychosis as represented by three differing musical suites - larynx-shredding rock, head-mashing ambient and heart-melting acoustic. In 'Duke Pandemonium', we see a change in the duke: The Duke is back and is ready for a party fuelled with decadence, deviance and dancing. From the minimalist lo-fi electronica of 'Kid Gloves', to the LCD Soundsystem-esque dance-punk mayhem of 'Silhouettes'; the urgent drum 'n' bass beats of 'Music Box'; the provocatively infectious pop-hooks of 'Rubber Lover'; and concluding with the carnival craziness of 'Skin The Mofo' - complete with steel drums; 'Duke Pandemonium' is the epitome of an eclectic record.
JOHN DAVID SOUTHER
'If The World Was You' CD Release Date 11/05/2009
http://991.com/buy/productinformation.aspx?StockNumber=468717
TAKEN FROM HIS WEBSITE: 'If The World Was You' is both a bold step forward and a return to Souther's Amarillo, Texas roots, where the young multi-instrumentalist grew up listening closely to Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and steeped in the improvisational sensibilities of John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis as well as in the music of country and rock pioneers Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison, all of whose influences are evident. Recorded live in the studio fronting a five-piece ensemble, two horns, piano, bass, and drums, Souther has crafted an inventive new musical setting for his characteristically playful and literate musings on life, love, and politics. The work of a musician at the height of his considerable powers, 'If The World Was You' is whip-smart, adventurous, seductive, and shot through with the sublime longing that characterizes Souther's finest work. And his voice [one of the most plaintive and soulful in rock 'n roll] has never sounded so immediate and so powerful. 'If The World Was You' is the long awaited return of a master singer/songwriter as well as the birth of a new and relevant artist who's creating music that is absolutely essential and entirely his own. Twenty-five years in the making, JD Souther's triumphant return with 'If The World Was You' has most definitely been worth the wait.
KING CRIMSON
'The Collectable King Crimson Volume 4' 2CD Release Date 11/05/2009
http://991.com/buy/productinformation.aspx?StockNumber=468719
Like fine wine King Crimson line-ups seem to improve with age - at least that's what the fan reaction tells us. Each new line-up is embraced with enthusiasm accompanied by a little caution only to become, usually in retrospect, "the best KC line up/tour/gig I ever saw". The 90's double trio/sextet line up was just reaching the point of mass acceptance when, in true Crim fashion, it was replaced with the leaner quartet line up featured on this 2CD set. Taken directly from the band's own DAT tapes of the event 'Live in Warsaw' is an ideal companion to the simultaneously reissued 'Eyes Wide Open' DVD. The Millennial Crimson packed a punch with a powerful set featuring material from the then recently released 'ConstruKction of Light' album plus a selection of improvs, Crim concert favourites & an encore of David Bowie's Heroes.. (It was, after all, Robert Fripp who fashioned the ultra-distinctive guitar part on the original David Bowie recording). The Collectable King Crimson series presents recordings drawn from the band's own extensive high quality concert tape archive, rehearsal tapes & audio restored bootlegs of historic recordings. Focusing on live performances that are of particular interest to the band's extensive fanbase, most titles in the series, including this one, are issued for a limited period only.
BILL EVANS
'Turn Out The Stars' 6CD Release Date 11/05/2009
http://991.com/buy/productinformation.aspx?StockNumber=468720
Though these extraordinary 1980 recordings were made only months before pianist Bill Evans' untimely death on September 15, 1980, at the age of 51, they capture a beginning far more than an end. At the time of their initial release in 1996, jazz critic Gary Giddins hailed them as "An important find - the most lyrical of improvisers was revitalised by a new trio in his favourite jazz club". Fellow Village Voice writer Will Friedwald concurred: 'Evans is as irrepressibly romantic as ever on these live recordings, but at the same time there's an aggression to his playing that makes these newly discovered documents some of the most exciting music of his career... he proves that he can really tear into the keyboard and still sound like Bill Evans. Continually prodded by [bassist] Marc Johnson and [drummer] Joe LaBarbera even as he's inspiring them, this is tenderness supported by strength and even bite'. Evans had clearly found players to match his first trio from 20 years earlier, which had cut a landmark live recording at the Village Vanguard in 1961. That now-legendary line-up of bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motion was shattered by the tragic death of LaFaro in a car crash. A sense of history and a feeling of renewal inform these 1980 sessions, and they illustrates the serious chemistry between Evans and his young accompanists. As pianist and friend Hank Danko recalls in his liner-notes essay, "When the trio lit into its ensemble passages, the impact was not unlike that of a roaring big band. This exuberant, extroverted and joyful approach extended to most of the material played, with Bill seeming, at times, to be its most youthful member". The performances on these six CDs - which feature newly written originals as well as brilliant interpretations of the standards that Evans loved - were recorded on the evenings of June 4, 5, 6 and 8, 1980. Evans intended to release a double LP culled form these sessions, and he supervised the initial mixing and editing of the tapes. It would take more than fifteen years before this material would become available, in an exhaustive, chronologically sequenced six-CD form, on the Warner Brothers label. This Nonesuch reissue contains the original packaging and liner notes, as well as the complete 1996 set. 'Turn Out The Stars' was released at a time when many other posthumous Evans recordings, both official and bootleg, were surfacing on CD. This was the one that critics agreed was essential. The Los Angeles Times urged readers to experience the collection "As a series of complete club sets, with the music ebbing and flowing from piece to piece". Evans, the newspaper noted, "was constantly in a state of quest, perpetually in search of an elusive musical goal, and - from his own point of view - never quite achieving it. The opportunity to share, even indirectly, in that quest is what, for the discerning listener, makes Evans' music so endlessly intriguing".

LEONA NAESS
'Thirteens' CD Release Date 11/05/2009
http://991.com/buy/productinformation.aspx?StockNumber=468744
"The singer returns with her most personal work to date" - Dazed & Confused Leona Naess was born in New York, grew up in London, returned to America, studied anthropology, got a record deal at 22, modelled for Calvin Klein and dated Ryan Adams, but the songwriter says she would "rather shoot myself than listen to my own story". On 11th May, Naess will release the exquisite Thirteens on Polydor, thirteen songs from thirteen homemade lo-fi "albums". The album is Naess's first LP in six years. In early 2004, on the eve of a tour to promote her third, self-titled album, Naess suddenly found herself mourning the passing of her father. "Did you ever have a day where it all just came apart?" she sings on 'Learning As We Go'. This, one suspects, was that day. Naess cancelled the tour and disappeared for a while, cutting herself off from the music scene. Recently, over the past two or three years and while living in London, Naess began playing again, teaming up with friend and producer Sam Dixon for daily writing sessions at his home, and here and there with other musician friends. 'Thirteens' brings together the best from this prolific time - astonishingly pure songs; songs of mourning and realisation and muted joy. Sadness has rarely sounded so sublime, from the slow, beautiful drift of opener 'Ghosts In The Attic' to the plaintive and confiding 'Heavy Like Sunday'. The record holds happier moments too, reflecting Naess's unassailable mischievous side: the giddiness of 'Lipstick', the rollicking 'Unnamed', written drunkenly just before her father's death, and the spirited, rabble-rousing future single 'Leave Your Boyfriends Behind', (a version featuring the vocal talents of Mr Ryan Adams will grace the b-side of the single out in June).
