BRUCE DICKINSON Signed Torpedo Tube Plaque

Ok the story goes.... Bruce made a surprise visit to the nuclear submarine HMS Victorious [stationed at HM Naval Base Clyde near Helensburgh in Scotland] by way of a special invitation from the vessel'sCaptain, Bruce a self-confessed fan of submarines, spent three days [27th-30th January 2012] experiencing first-hand what it was like to live and work on board. Whilst touring the vessel he signed autographs for the crew, one of the itemswas this unusual and unique piece. A plaque taken from torpedo tube number 6, Bruce has signed the back with the message 'Farewell cruel world' & 'Armageddin it.' plus dated '27-30 2012' all in black marker pen. This sure is a one-of-a-kind item, one not to missed and sure to be a highlight and talking point in any collection.

 

THE PINK FLOYD Arnold Layne

It's 1967, you're walking down Carnaby Street in your blue velvet trousers & you hear a strange song about somebody stealing washing echoing out of the nearest boutique. Upon investigation you discover the debut 7" ofa new band called 'The Pink Floyd' with Candy And A Current Bun on the b-side, tucked nicely into a die cut die-cut Columbia paper sleeve. This copy looks lovely with just a few light surface scuffs to prevent a mint grading. 'I'll never findone like this again', you think, so you buy it - I would too.

 

 

JIMI HENDRIX Smash Hits

1968 UK 12-track stereo LP, featuring the classic tracks Purple Haze, Fire, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary & more, front laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve has creasing to the laminate yet the print on the back is still off-white & the spine perfectly legible. The previous owner has also stamped their name on the back. The vinyl reveals just a couple of light surface scuffs but these are not deep enough to affect play, otherwise an excellent copy!

THE BEATLES Abbey Road

Very rare original 1969 Japanese first issue 16-track LP pressed on Red 'Everclean' vinyl, picture sleeve which has a tracklisting order error with 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' swapped with 'Something'; complete with black inner sleeve, lyric insert and the rare 'medallion' obi-strip. The sleeve has some light wear to the edges, the labels have a small amount of foxing and the vinyl has just a couple of light inaudible surface scuffs which has no effect on play. A superb, complete and rare edition of this great album.

 

JIMI HENDRIX Hey Joe

Rare original 1968 Japanese Polydor label 2-track 7" vinyl single manufactured by Nippon Grammophon, also including Stone Free, comes in a unique flipback picture sleeve with Japanese text biography and lyrics printed on the reverse. The sleeve has only a few light signs of shelfwear with light creases, a little foxing and general light signs of age, however this does not detract from the striking cover design & there are no splits with secure flipbacks. The vinyl is in superb condition retaining a beautiful shine nearly 40 years on - a great copy of this hard to find issue at an advantageous price!

 

IRON MAIDEN Corre A Las Colinas

Rare 1982 Spanish issue promotional wide centred 7" for 'Run To The Hills', also includes Eclipse Total 'Total Eclipse'. The labels are clearly printed with 'promoción' promo text, comes in a superb Spanish & English titled textured picture sleeve with a promo stamp on theback. The sleeve on this copy has only a few light signs of storage wear on the edges & corners which you would normaly expect to see but has no tears. The vinyl is in a remarkable 'near as new' outstanding condition. A stunning copy of thishighly collectable single, the first copy we have ever seen.

KATE BUSH Handwritten Letter From Australia

Way back when, a certain songbird was winging her way to Australia to promote her second album, which she had literally just finished. During her promotional visit, she was to appear as a presenter onthe tenth annual 'TV Week King Of Pop' awards show on the 14th October that year. What we have here is a hand written letter to Tony Myatt of Capital Radio, who was the first DJ to ever play Kate's music over the air & had become a personal friend. The letter is postmarked 12th October at 5PM, so it must have been mailed on the first day of her trip & written after her first visits to some Australian radio stations that morning, as it refers to them in the letter. She obviously started the letter the day before as she's dated it 11-10-78 & it's on a Quantas photo letter with fold out scenes from Oz. Folding out to a good A4 size, this is a lovely souvenir of the early days in Kate Bush's career, after the mammoth worldwide successes of the singles of 'Wuthering Heights' & 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes', along with the album 'The Kick Inside', but before 'Lionheart' & the one & only 'Tour Of Life' in 1979. A remarkable item and an insight into the genuinely nice person Kate obviously is, all as observed in this letter from Australia to a friend.

2011 UK 36-track triple CD set - Drawn from six shows recorded over three days [10-12th October 1968] at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. These performances celebrated the second anniversary of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and came just as the groundbreaking album Electric Ladyland was released. The bonus disc features extra material from the last night along with an exclusive backstage interview with Jimi at the Boston Garden a few weeks after the Winterland performances. Comes in a glossy hardback bookstyle pack with an integral 36-page booklet with rare photographs & liner notes by David Fricke.

Scarce 1982 Dutch 5-track 12" vinyl EP, featuring 1,000,000, Stumble, Wolves Lower, Gardening At Night & Carnival Of Sorts [Box Cars], picture sleeve. The sleeve shows only light signs of shelf wear & the vinyl looks barely played.

 

TEN YEARS AFTER Alvin Lee & Company

1972 UK 6-track LP, on the red and white Deram label, with front laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve shows some light shelfwear & minor laminate creasing, however the vinyl remains in excellent conditon withbarely any signs of play. A great example of this classic record.

GONG Gong Est Mort Vive Gong

Scarce French only 10-track Tapioca label double vinyl LP album of the 1977 reunion concert recorded live at the Hippodrome in Paris on 28th May. Housed in a unique laminated gatefold picture sleeve featuring a bandpicture on the inside which has had the face of Steve Hillage removed due to legal problems with Virgin records & resulting in him being credited as Bert Camenbert!. Both the vinyl and sleeve are in excellent condition.

 

GENESIS Foxtrot

1972 UK first press large 'Mad Hatter' Charisma label 6-track LP with A1U/B1U matrices, 'Porky' & 'Peko' text in the runoff area & 'B&C Records' perimeter text on the label. The textured gatefold sleeve has the B&C marketing address at the bottom inside left panel & E.J. Day credit bottom right, complete with the rarely seen red advertising inner. The sleeve has a few storage marks evident & shows just a little shelfwear with age. The vinyl is clean with just a few light hairline scuffs indicating only minimal play - an excellent grade copy overall!

 

IRON MAIDEN Powerslave

Rare 1984 UK limited edition 8-track PICTURE DISC LP including the classic tracks '2 Minutes To Midnight' and the epic 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner'. This copy has the known pressing error where near the end of thetitle track it speeds up to 45rpm. The disc features the superb sphinx 'Eddie' pyramid artwork on the front and band members in a tomb image on the back. Although picture discs are not known to have great sound quality, this one actually playsand sounds great [we know as we played it], Side B does have a few light signs of being played more but is still a great item.

1974 UK 11-track promotional vinyl LP with 'Promotion Copy Only' pink rim labels, complete with Island inner, plain die cut sleeve. The vinyl on this copy remains in excellent condition with little sign of play.

 

 

ZOOT SIMS Trotting!

1963 US 10-track mono LP on the dark blue Prestige label, also featuring Harry Biss or John Lewis on Piano, Clyde Lombardi or Curly Russell on Bass, Art Blakey or Don Lamond on Drums, pasted picture sleeve with tape reinforced edges. Thanks to the wise move by the original purchaser, the sleeve does not show the usual seam or spine splits that are so common on this design of sleeve. The sleeve shows just a little shelfwear & the vinyl remains excellent with just afew light surface scuffs to show for its fifty years - A nice copy of this hard to find album.

 

RADIOHEAD In Rainbows

Rare 2007 UK limited edition pre-order box set only available through the official inrainbows.com & waste.uk.com websites. This stunning box set features the album pressed on heavyweight 45 rpm vinyl 2-LP set and CD, the second compact disc is enhanced and features eight additional tracks as well as digital photos and artwork - not available with the normal release of the album and runs for 26:53 minutes. Presented in a 13" x 13" hardback book with lyrics insideand also includes a separate picture booklet, all housed in a outer picture slipcase - a must have for any fan!

1991 US limited EIGHT vinyl LP boxed set, a collection of bootleg recordings which were originally distributed illegally but were released officially as part of Zappa's campaign to dissuade his fans from buyingillegal recordings of his concerts. The whole set is digitally remastered from the original sources & spans a fifteen-year period from September 30, 1967 ('Tis the Season to Be Jelly) to May 21, 1982 (two tracks from As an Am). The custom printed cardboard box opens up to reveal a superb full colour stage pop-up, with each album housed in its own respective picture sleeve. The outer box shows minimal wear, the inner sleeves are in excellent condition & the vinyl looks barely played.

1957 US 14-track LP on a black 'deep groove' trumpeter label, fully silk laminated pasted picture sleeve with tape reinforced top & spine. The sleeve has started to split at the spine, but otherwise remains in nice condition with just light shelfwear & minor creasing commensurate with its age. The vinyl still remains in excellent condition with just a couple of light surface scuffs to show for its fifty five years.A nice copy of this hard to find original.

Iron Maiden beer doubles demand at family brewery

A family-run brewery in Stockport has moved to an unprecedented six-day week to meet a stampede of demand from its newest customer base - Iron Maiden fans.

Five months ago the brewery, best known for its 'Old Tom' strong ale, couldn't believe its luck when it was approached by the British heavy metal veterans to collaborate on a new tipple.

'Trooper', an Iron-Maiden designed real ale, will not launch until next month but already 300,000 pints have been pre-ordered by avid fans around the world and retailers from more than 100 countries have applied to stock it.

"For the first time in our history we’re brewing three times a day and six days a week," said David Bremner, marketing director at 175-year-old brewer Robinsons. That's more than double the normal two batches a day, four days a week brewing schedule.

The top-secret project was revealed to fans in March through a post on Iron Maiden's Facebook page and within three hours Trooper became the third most followed beer on Facebook with 22,000 fans. It now has more than 42,000 'likes' on the social networking site.

"I’ve never known anything like it for a band's following globally," said Mr Bremner, who added that Robinsons has spent nothing on marketing the beer.

Record Collector Lists Most Valuable Records

Records from the likes of the Spice Girls and Blur are becoming prized by collectors, with some selling for hundreds of pounds.

Albums by the Spice Girls and the Now That's What I Call Music compilations are among the unlikely releases which are now prized by enthusiasts.

Record Collector magazine said discs by the likes of Keane, Blur and Abba are also selling for high prices - sometimes hundreds of pounds.

Enthusiasts often spend a fortune on rare acetate copies, music by cult performers or vinyl versions.

The magazine's biannual list of the UK's rarest records now highlights mainstream acts and run-of-the-mill albums or singles which can fetch a decent price.

They include releases such as the long-running Now That's What I Call Music albums, featuring various artists.

Number 35 in the series, which was released in 1997, can command £80, mainly because at the time of its release few people were buying vinyl copies and it is now scarce.

Conversely, a CD version of Now 4, which was released in 1984, is valued at £200, because at that time the CD was a novelty.

Also on the list is the Spice Girls' second album Spiceworld, with original vinyl copies fetching around £30 - mainly because the vast majority of sales were on CD.

80s pop compilations now reach 'extraordinary prices

For Now That’s What I Call Music compilations have begun to fetch “extraordinary prices” at sale, beating the likes of Duran Duran and Madness as collectors flock to own them.

Record Collector magazine, which is better known for compiling lists of rare records, found mainstream pop acts are now beginning to make hundreds of pounds.

A CD version of Now 4, released in 1984, is now valued at £200, partly in recognition of the novelty value of the medium at the time.

It easily eclipses prices raised by a limited edition Blur album from the height of their fame at £70, and Madness’ Baggy Trousers at £75 and a rare 12-inch version of Duran Duran’s Lay Lady Lay/Ordinary World/White Lines at £150.

A seven-inch copy of Abba's Voulez Vous/Angel Eyes dating from 1979 on red or yellow vinyl may go for £400, the magazine found.

Now 35, released in 1997, can command £80. At the time of its release, few people were buying vinyl copies and it is now scarce.

The magazine said the results formed "a list of records worth reasonable money that might just be owned by people who have bought only chart or best-selling records in the last 30 years".

This pressing has the A2/B2 matrix numbers stamped into the run-out groove, confirming first issue. The sleeve has just a little creasing to the laminate, however this appears to be a manufacturing fault rather than the result of wear over the years, and the previous owner has also written their name on the inside. The vinyl has only a few light surface marks which do not affect play, and retains a lovely deep shine - a more than respectable excellent copy of this classic!

1968 UK 13-track mono LP, the seriously rare soundtrack to the classic film starring Pete & Dud, Eleanor Bron and even Raquel Welch as 'Lust'. The film sees Dud cast as the desperate Stanley Moon, who is tempted by Pete as the Devil & granted seven wishes in return for his soul. The soundtrack music was composed by Dudley Moore & Peter Cook wrote the screenplay. A superb example of the partnership at the peak of their creative powers. The sleeve shows just a little light shelfwear with a bit of laminate lift at the spine in places, the spine remaining clearly readable. The vinyl itself is in astonishing near 'as new' condition with just light paper scuffs evident upon very close inspection to show for its forty five years. Probably the best copy of this that you are ever likely to see!

Lots of discussions in the office about why there’s something faintly embarrassing about seeing the uh, more mature musician acting like he’s still a kid full of vim (not the cleaning product, that’s Jumping Jack Flash). I am racking what’s left of my brains to remember how I felt when I was young and saw old rockers. Did I believe that people who reached 30, or even 21, had no right to rock? I suspect it was a conceit injected into the culture by punk, but that may not be the case. Many people enjoyed Bill Haley’s UK tours in 1969, ’72 and ’74, and by all accounts those shows were almost as exciting as in the mid-50s when Haley invented teenagers. Did people judge the 40-something Haley in 1969 and decide he was past it? I doubt it. Bear in mind that Bill was in his early 30s when he first kicked off trashing cinema seats in the name of fun. Haley never appeared to be anything other than what he was; an avuncular western swing singer updating Louis Jordan for a new era. Nobody expected him to be anything other than showbiz – it was the sound that was exciting, not his style. So while you might find the music slightly embarrassing and past-it, Haley wasn’t, because he never pretended to be a kid, no matter how much twirling of the double bass went on. To me that is the crucial thing: it’s only the musicians that imagine – or kid themselves that we imagine – they’re still young that are an embarrassment.

 

When did we start believing that mature folk weren’t entitled to rock? Few musicians dared consider the matter until punk forced them to; The Byrds may have sung as cynical a song about the process as you could imagine, but there’s no mention about what happens when your pants are tight from a beer gut rather than a strategically-placed enhancement sock. One of the few tunes to face the problem was this one; it’s whimsical but at least it was aware that rock’n’roll was getting on a bit. Of course, there is an argument that us old music lovers have earned the right to be as embarrassing as we like, and that if you can’t make the kids cringe with what they love to call “dad dancing”, you’re not doing your job. I figure that you should dance if you want to (yes, that link does lead where you expect; perhaps you’d rather not click), but maybe don’t do it on stage…

 

The new issue is going out to subscribers in the next day or so; it’s in the shops on the 25th. Lots of unlikely valuable records on the cover – plus a small gratuitous picture of this lady. Inside, The Hollies, Wire, Sandie Shaw, ZZ Top, TT Shakers, more San Francisco Psych and a fascinating story about the acts who laid the foundation for AC/DC. Plus all the usual strange bits and bobs. Record Collector: if I wasn’t working for it, I’d buy it.

2013 UK Record Store Day limited edition vinyl Clear Vinyl 7" single, featuring the same song perfomed by The Doors [1967] and X [1980], comes in a double stickered PVC sleeve.

 

 

BOB DYLAN No Direction Home [The Bootleg Series Volume 7]

2006 US exclusive limited edition 28-track 4-LP set pressed on 200gram QUIEX SUPER VINYL, this deluxe edition comes from the original mixdown masters & was transferred to lacquer on Classic's 'all tube' analog cutting system; unlike the previous three 'Bootleg' installments, focusing exclusively on live concerts, this is assembled from a variety of sources, including home recordings, demos & live recordings. Superbly presented with 60-page booklet, including alternate album cover art, housed in special outer box. The box exhibits some localised creasing to the front but otherwise superb.

 

MADONNA True Blue

Mega rare Hong Kong only limited edition 9-track LP pressed onCLEAR VINYL, housed in a superb glossy pasted picture sleeve. The sleeve has only a few minor signs of shelfwear and the vinyl is excellent. A respectable copy of this sought after pressing.

Record Store Day 2013: the records and the bands to watch

Music fans will be flocking to independent record stores on the sixth Record Store Day, with 500 exclusive vinyl releases available — from rare Dylan 7" to the shortest album in the world.

Today is Record Store Day, an event set up six years ago to promote independent music shops by selling exclusive vinyl recordings to fans.

Record Store Day is considered a success, and the interest of fans reflects an impressive rise in vinyl sales: 78 per cent more vinyl records were sold in the first quarter of 2013 than in the first quarter of 2012. Furthermore, sales of vinyl in 2012 reached 389,000 - the highest since 2004.

Statistics aside, Record Store Day 2013 has plenty to genuinely excite music fans - regardless of whether you've dusted off the turntable recently. Over 500 exclusive records have been produced for the event, from artists including David Bowie (material from The Next Day on white vinyl) and Pink Floyd (a pink pressing of the band's second single See Emily Play with orignal Syd Barret artwork).

In previous years fans have queued up to get their hands on the limited number of rare records available.

This year there are just 500 copies available of a green vinyl of Gil Scott Heron's drink-inspired track, The Bottle, and a red pressing of Echo & The Bunnymen LP Crocodiles Weatherbox, amongst others. Chas N Dave fans might be sharpening their elbows to get hold of one of the 800 7" recordings of their track Rabbit, shaped like the animal itself.
