Warhol, Lichtenstein and Ai Weiwei pieces break art records at New York auction

Andy Warhol's "Double Elvis" sold for $37 million and works by Roy Lichtenstein and Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei broke their own records at Sotheby's contemporary art sale yesterday, Wednesday.

Lichtenstein's "Sleeping Girl," depicting a woman with closed eyes and flowing blond hair, fetched $44,882,500; Weiwei's 1-ton, handmade porcelain "Sunflower Seeds" brought $782,500.

Another major work on the auction block - Francis Bacon's "Figure Writing Reflected in Mirror" - sold for $44,882,500. The buyers' names for each of the four pieces were not released.

The sale came on the heels of art auction history. Last week, the auction house sold Edvard Munch's "The Scream" for $119.9 million, making it the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.

"The reason for these record-breaking sales is, quite simply, the quality of material on show," said Michael Frahm, a contemporary art adviser at the London-based Frahm Ltd. "The key is quality."

Andy Warhol 'Double Elvis’ expected to make $50m

An Andy Warhol portrait of Elvis Presley as a cowboy could make as much as $50 million (£31 million) when it goes up for auction this evening.

Sotheby’s says the “Double Elvis (Ferus Type)” will be sold Wednesday night, 7pm EDT, during a contemporary art sale.

The silver silk screen painting shows Elvis armed and shooting from the hip. A shadowy Elvis figure is faintly visible in the background.

It was exhibited at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1963, the year it was created.

The auction house said it’s the first “Double Elvis” to appear on the market since 1995. The sale estimate is $30 million to $50 million.

Sotheby’s identified the seller only as a private collector.

Sgt Pepper revisited for 2012

Sir Peter Blake has taken inspiration from his famous Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover to create a new artwork.

When it first appeared in 1967, the album cover of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band featured the style icons of the day, including Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando and Karl Marx.

The list of today's heroes, collated by Sir Peter Blake, the original designer, reveals a slightly more sedate bunch. The chefs Delia Smith and Mark Hix, the author JK Rowling and the designer Robin Day were among those on a recreation chosen to celebrate Sir Peter's 80th birthday.

He said: "I've chosen people I admire, great people and some who are dear friends. I had a very long list of people who I wanted to go in but couldn't fit everyone in. That shows how strong British culture is.

"The Sgt Pepper album cover was made by cutting pieces of cardboard and hand–colouring them. This one is computer generated. I often thought that if I did it again it would be very quick on the computer but it was very laborious."

Courtesy of Pitchfork, 90s band devotion could often be reduced to the classic logo design worn religiously on a white T or inked across a shoulder in a fit of madness. No prizes for guessing some of these, but can you name them all?

 

Bob Dylan Brazilian-inspired art debuts in Denmark

Some of musician Bob Dylan's artwork, that has never been shown to the public, is to be displayed at Denmark's National Gallery. Curator Kasper Monrad said that the 40 acrylic paintings were specifically made for the Danish exhibition, which opens on Friday.

The Brazil Series includes figurative scenes from Brazilian slums, farms and beaches. The exhibition will run until the end of January 2011.
