NIRVANA The Songs Of Kurt Cobain
Mega rare official 2007 US Primary Wave Music Publishing promotional-only 69-track 5-CD set produced to promote licensing interest in Kurt's extensive back catalogue, acquired by Primary Wave from Courtney Love in early 2007. The five unique picture/tracklisting discs are presented in a superb custom fold-out picture sleeve.
Rare official 2011 US Sire/Rhino 12-track promotional-only CD-R acetate sampler for the 8-disc remastered box set. This promo includes Hand In Glove, This Charming Man, Panic, Girlfriend In A Coma and Bigmouth Strikes Again [Live]. Custom printed disc, picture sleeve and tracklisting back insert with the catalogue number PRCD-400213. It is rumoured only 200 of these were pressed...
Original 1994 US 12-track LP, featuring the first major label hit 'Loser'. Hard to find now on vinyl, especially in this condition. This copy remains factory sealed from new, the vinyl mint & unplayed.
2011 Japanese Super Deluxe Limited Edition 4-SHM-CD/DVD boxset - Celebrating 20 years since the album's release, it's only right that it is marked with a lavish repackaging, and sure enough a four SHM-CD-and-one-DVD sethas been assembled. Featuring the original album [plus a spread of B sides from its singles, and live versions of non-Nevermind tracks Sliver, Been a Son and School] alongside a collection of cuts from the band's Smart Sessions - when Chad Channing was still their drummer - and a number of ear-piercing rehearsal takes taped directly onto a boombox. A full live set fills one of the remaining discs, recorded live at the Paramount Theatre, Seattle for Halloween 1992. This also makes up the Region 2 DVD [certain clips were taken from the performance for the band's 1994 video, 'Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!'], along with the iconic 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' music video and those for the rest of 'Nevermind''s singles. And the final CD is home to perhaps the most fascinating tracks: 'Devonshire Mixes' of 'Nevermind', running in the order of the final album, albeit without 'Polly' and 'Endless Nameless'. Butch Vig put these together as the album was coming together, so they're as much his vision as the band's - which, to fans, will be welcomed after Andy Wallace's heavy-handed mixing of 'Nevermind' wiped clean some of its rawness. A fantastic and unmissable set pressed on the Japanese-exclusive audiophile SHM [Super High Material] discs, presented in a deluxe box with a beautifully constructed accompanying 90-page booklet full of rarely and never-before-seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era, with Japanese liner note booklet and custom stickered factory shrink.

THE BEATLES NME Poll-Winners Concert 1966
Very rare original 1966 UK 20-page 5½" x 8¾" programme for the 1965-66 New Music Express Poll-Winners All-Stars Concert, staged at the Empire Pool, London [now Wembley Arena] on Sunday May 1st. This wasthe Beatles first live performance of the year and their last ever UK concert appearance! Other artists on the bill included the Spencer Davis Group, Cliff Richard, Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Dusty Springfield, The Who, Yardbirds andWalker Brothers. This copy has handwriting in the centre pages as the original owner wrote the artist running order next to the artist list, the cover has some light foxing and stoage wear - all pages are intact with just some light creases but has no nicks, rips or tears and still a superb copy of this 45 year old programme!
1974 UK 10-track LP - a British rarity from the hard rock/progressive era. The picture sleeve has a slight sticker mark top left but is otherwise in excellent condition and complete with the lyric insert. The vinyl looks barely played.
1990 UK Atlantic label 4-track promotional only CD box set sampler featuring Stairway To Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song and Good Times Bad Times, housed in a custom 10" x 5" gold and blue fold-out box with shaped'airship' flap which remains factory sealed from new - still MINT and unplayed nearly two decades on!

It's 11/11/11. The world hasn't ended here at 991 as many predicted but the world for many did end prematurely in the fight for freedom - we remember them today.
________
991 brings you snippets from this week's R.C. Newsletter. You can subscribe to the full unedited version by emailing Anna: anna.bowen@metropolis.co.uk [Please mention 991]
What a week! There’s been so much fuss caused by our December issue’s cover story, which the national press and the BBC picked up on. At one point it was the fourth-most-read on story on the BBC News website – above the Euro crisis, curiously! That’s brilliant, and we’re indebted to everyone who read the story in the papers and online and got in touch about it. Thank you for all your interest; we think it shows that artwork really DOES matter to music fans and that despite the convenience of MP3, people still love seeing and holding a great album cover designed to suit a proper slab of vinyl.
In the credit where credit’s due department, Record Collector wants to doff its metaphorical cap to the late Jimmy Savile. (It has to be a metaphorical cap – our heads are too big to fit a real one.) Yes, I know he was a bit of a joker. No, we didn’t much like his hairstyle where one side was black and the other white. And it’s true, Jimmy would never have won a John Peel Award for promoting new music. But RC says he is important for three reasons, not all of which have been mentioned in the obituaries. One: he was the first personality jock in Britain. Before him, the style was, at best, Pete Murray and David Jacobs. No disrespect to those two legends of broadcasting, but Savile brought real personality to the microphone, making him compulsive listening across Europe on Radio Luxembourg in the late 50s and early 60s. Without his innovations, pirate jocks such as Emperor Rosko and Stuart Henry would never have made it onto the airwaves. Two: he was reputedly the first DJ to go out on the road with twin decks, rendering him able to deliver a seamless segue if he wanted to. Three, his clothing style predated street sportswear by decades. In fact the last two make him the founding father of hip hop – not that hip hop would agree. Whether you found him an irritant or a legend, he could not be ignored, and the charity sector – he gave away 90% of his income, it is said – will surely miss his input. We look forward to the biopic, rumoured to be starring Steve Coogan. RIP Jimmy, you were a pioneer…
Record Collector will have a stall at the Olympia Record Fair this weekend. If you’re there, do come up and say hello. And please don’t snap up the records on our wants lists and them wave them in our ugly faces; you wouldn’t want to see us cry, it’s not a pretty sight…
Thanks for reading
Have a good week
Editor-in-Chief, Record Collector
The brand new issue of the monthly Record Collector magazine is on the shelves right now. Here's what you will find inside...
