CD sales may be in decline but the market for rare records is booming. We look at some new potential rarities and some hugely valuable releases from the past.

CD sales have fallen in recent years, with music fans opting instead to spend their cash on live events and digital downloads. But you might want to think twice before clearing out your record collection.

The market for rare and collectable records is booming. Scarce items by iconic acts like the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix are fetching five-figure sums at auction, while more modern names are also proving to be worthwhile investments.

And it's not just obscure items that are climbing in value. UK retailer 991.com - one of the world's biggest dealers in collectable records - saw sales increase 15% last year to £1.5 million, as increasing numbers of investors opted to plough their money into rock and pop.

This coming Saturday (16 April) is Record Store Day, where independent record shops across the world will sell a host of limited edition singles and albums by artists including Radiohead, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, the White Stripes and Arctic Monkeys. Most of them will be vinyl releases and could well be valuable in the future.

We look at a few of the Record Store Day releases that could be future collectables and some really valuable records from the past that you might already own.

'The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge of Town' was directed by Grammy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The film received a rapturous critical response around the world, including as an official selection, Toronto International Film Festival, The BFI London Film Festival, and The International Rome Film Festival.

The ninety-minute documentary combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978, including home rehearsals and studio sessions, with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record.

Ozzy to receive Kerrang! legend award

Ozzy Osbourne is to receive the “Legend” award at this year’s Kerrang! awards, which celebrate 30 years of the magazine.

The awards takes place in London on June 9th and Osbourne will also be playing a “30th anniversary party” for Kerrang! in London on June 21th.

Departing Kerrang! editor Nichola Browne said the magazine is “unbelievably excited” to have Ozzy play a show for the magazine. “We are privileged that the Prince of Darkness can help us mark this momentous milestone in style and it’s guaranteed to be a night to remember,” she explained.

The Kerrang! Awards, which are sponsored by Relentless, coincide with the re-release of Ozzy Osbourne’s solo albums Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman. This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Slipknot / Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, who compere the awards for the third consecutive year.

Hard to find 1983 UK Island promotional only vinyl interview LP for 'Under A Blood Red Sky' featuring all 8 tracks from the album preceded by comment from the band. Jeff Buckley biopic finally going ahead

Details for the long-gestating Jeff Buckley biopic are finally being solidified.

A biopic of the late Jeff Buckley's life was first being talked about in 2006 with young director Brian Jun at the helm. Now Deadline New York reveals that the project is picking up steam again after director Jake Scott came on board.

The British director has produced music videos for Oasis, U2, Radiohead, R.E.M, Soundgarden, and made two feature films ' 1999's Plunkett and MacLeane and 2010's Welcome To The Rileys.

Scott will be working from a script by Ryan Jaffe, who penned the 2008 Rainn Wilson comedy The Rocker. Buckley's mother Mary Guibert validates the film as exec producer, with Michelle Sy and Orian Williams as producers.

GORILLAZ The Fall - Release Date: 20/04/2011

2011 Japanese-issue 15-track CD album - On their North American tour last autumn, Gorillaz recorded a musical diary. The result is a collection of 15 tracks, some with vocals, some without, some combined performances and some solo. The sonic journal is titled 'The Fall' and it was recorded during spare time while on the road. 'I did it because there's a lot of time that you just spend staring at walls essentially. And it was a fanastic way of doing it' says Damon Albarn. 'I found working in the day, whether it's in the hotel or in the venue, it was a brilliant way of keeping myself well.' He adds that the collection is 'like a diary, I literally wrote everything on the day in each place and there's a strange sort of sound of America and its musical traditions that comes through. It feels like a journey through America.'. Includes guest appearances by Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Bobby Womack. Japanese pressing will come with a poster, picture sleeve + obi-strip.
